Hello all,

I live near the beach, and I've been putting my revolvers in silicone-treated handgun socks, and then in cases with foam rubber. When I take the revolvers out, there always seems to be a slight impression of the sock on the metal. It does rub off rather easily. Is keeping them in a sock a bad idea?

I also had a full sock on a couple of shotguns that left an impression on the wood that was hard to rub out. I've since taken them off the shotguns

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

I wouldn't keep them in the foam rubber cases for long term storage. The foam holds mositure/humidity.

If Bore Stores is still in business, go with them.

Get them away from the foam rubber!!

I never liked the idea of socks because I was paranoid about some damage happening under the sock that I couldn't see. And I sure didn't want to have to pull each gun out every few months to check for damage. But I did end up put two rifles with high grade wood in silicon socks to prevent damage to the wood in my over crowded safes. So far there's been no damage to the wood or metal.

Socks good - foam cases bad

I think the socks are fine, and store several of my guns in them and haven't had any issues. But I NEVER store in foam case of any type. Nor do I store in those foam cases that have faux fur or anything like them. I've seen many guns' bluing ruined by them, although the guns might have had a little moisture on them to begin with, and not wiped beforehand.

Never store guns in foam cases or those cheap zippered gun rugs. You're just asking for finish issues.

I've been using Bore Stores for over 30 years. I also have handguns stacked on each other in my safe. Never had a problem.
I tried some cheaper ones some years ago. As soon as I took them out of the package, I saw they weren't near as good. I'll stick with Bore Stores. ;)

BTW: Bore Stores is a family owned business. They were hit hard by Covid and are still struggling to catch up. But they are out there. You just may have to search a bit. ;)

I used plain old white cotton socks for years before I got fancy and got some "gun socks" off E-bay or some such place. If they have a brand name I don't remember it. Just grey, acrylic wool socks that seem to work perfectly for the job intended. My guns stay in them in the safe, the range bag, most anywhere where they're not being used. Never a problem, but I admit that I keep most all my guns under a coat or two of Ren Wax.

I just looked them up. They're called "Outdoor Obscession". Sounds like a cheap cologne, doesn't it. :D

I've been keeping mine in silicone socks for years. If I put them in socks I can stack them like cordwood in my safe and put a lot of guns in a little space with no damage. Never had any issues whatsoever.
Precisely my experience too...At the moment there are 120 or so S&W revolvers in that exact condition in my safe, and I could fit double that number if the population keeps growing...:o...Ben

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are keeping the original boxes they can be stored on a shelf in any closet.

If Bore Stores is still in business, go with them.

Those are definitely excellent.

Get them away from the foam rubber!!

If you've ever seen what foam rubber can do to a handgun you do learn to avoid it!

Whether it's Bore Stores, socks, or soft gun rugs with non-foam interiors they all work. Socks take up the least room in a gun safe but Bore Stores are a very close second.
