Among those who have used or tried to use chest holsters for single action revolvers having barrels between 5.0 and 6.5 inches, please describe how efficiently and comfortably this class of holster functioned for you. I am particularly interested in winter and otherwise nasty weather use. My area of extreme west-central Montana kind've specializes in this weather. I usually wear a lightly loaded framed rucksack (no hip/waist belt) or externally framed, low riding backpack for at least part-time while I'm out.

Nuances of this type of holster include whether you have a preference for leather holster or soft synthetic, for leather harness or nylon® web. And lastly, if you tried a pouch shoulder holster in comparison, what were your conclusions?

(Edit) I strongly dislike Kydex® and other hard shell holsters.

If I omitted what you consider important, please respond as though I asked.

I had several old M7 shoulder holsters for the M9/ 1911 laying around so I modified the strap on one to fit my Ruger SBH with 5 1/2 inch barrel. Works fine, maybe a little floppy, and it's what I've used when hunting.

While I have not tried this style of holster, the Simply Rugged chest holder harness attachment for their holsters has good reviews. Holster and harness are leather. An advantage is the versatility of the combo, providing for standard OWB, cross draw, or chest carry.

Another popular leather choice is El Paso Saddlery's Tanker model, although the pistol is positioned above the belt on the weak side abdomen, with the shoulder strap crossing the sternum, rather than carrying in the middle of the chest.

I have a Diamond D guides choice {Leather} that I like. I also have a Tanker holster {Leather} The Diamond D can be worn anywhere from under the arm to anywhere high or low on the chest. Easy on and easy off. Can be worn either outside a jacket or inside the jacket. {it has enough adjustment and it's a quick pull adjustment}

The tanker holster would work better if I wore an Eisenhower jacket with the epaulets or something like it} to hold the strap from sawing on my neck.

I prefer the Diamond D

If you haven't experience with it, furnishing descriptions of holsters, chest or shoulder, doesn't me help much

I have used Guide's Choice Diamond D Chest Holsters for a 4" X Frame S&W and a 6" Model 629. Comfortable. Good weight distribution. Easy to get to. First rate quality. Also use a shoulder holster for a 4" Model 58 S&W, that works well. I done thickest holster better for barrels over 4".

Simply Rugged

I carry my 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk in a Simply Rugged chest holster. I also have an attachment from Simply Rugged that converts a belt holster in to a chest holster using the Simply Rugged harness. I carry my 6" S&W 586 in a Guide's Choice chest holster.
