I recently bought out the parts inventory of a deceased gunsmith who was heavy into S&Ws. In the bottom of a box, I came upon what I can only call a single shot adapter. It replaces the whole cylinder/crane assy, swings in and out, ejects, ect. just like a cylinder, but only has a single chamber. I'm trying to figure out if it's a factory part, and why someone would use one. I'll get some pics and post them if needed.

I just went back through my SCSW 4th edition, and it doesn't look like that was a production item... there were lots of tip-up single shots, though. Isn't there a Ruger single shot pistol that works somewhat like you describe? I'm going to hazard a guess that the unit you have was built as a one-off (or at least limited production) item by the gunsmith or someone he knew. It would have been for precision target shooting like the Olympic Free Pistol events, but by the time it would have been made I can't imagine it being very competitive at that level.

Before the Ruger Hawkeye, Colt made a single shot .22 target pistol with a swing out chamber. It was built on the Official Police frame and was called the Camp Perry model. Only about 2500 wee built from the mid 1920's to WWII.
I saw something on that Colt recently, but I think that it actually had a swing out barrel whose rear end looked like a slab that filled the cylinder window in the frame. There was no barrel/cylinder gap, just a chamber at the back end of the bore.
We would love to see pictures of that single shot cylinder. I can visualize it looking similar to the Ruger Hawkeye revolver. If you do post pictures I would expect you would get a few offers to purchase, if you might be inclined to sell it. Doubtful if it is factory, but "back in the day" there were quite a few enterprising gunsmiths.
