My S&W 3rd gen has an orange follower that I really like because it is so much easier to see when you check the chamber. Just got to keep it wiped off or it starts turning black.
It makes so much sense to have them visible I don't know why they don't make all of them lighter colors.
The 1st and 2nd gen 8rd mags had black followers. The later 2nd and early 3rd gen 8rd mags had orange followers. The later 3rd gen 9rd magazines (as well as the 3913/CS9) have red followers.
My 39-2 came with 8 round mags with the figure 8 metal followers when I bought it new in 1970. a couple of years later I got more 8 round mags for it (S&W) and they had black followers.
My 908/3913 mags are 8 round with red/orange followers.
The orange followers will get stained to the point that ... well, if you're anal like me ... to the point that they look like do-do. Next time you make a Midway order, you can add a couple in at $3.50 a pop ...
I hate to admit that I swap the stained followers back into the mags before going out to shoot. I'll clean the mags anyway, and just swap the sparkly new ones back in.
