Sinus infection?

I thought I had a tooth ache Thursday and Friday. Saturday I realized it was a sinus infection when I woke up. My right eye was swollen up.

I've been taking a nasal decongestant and flushing with a nasal solution. It's getting better but I'm still miserable.

I've never had this before.

Any suggestions?

Should I call Rotor Rooter?

You need a nasal steroid and an antibiotic, probably Augmentin. Say hello to your buddy the toilet, but it will cure what ails you. Once the infection gets into your glands etc and yours sounds like it has, it can be serious. You need to go to the doctor and have them prescribe so stuff for you. Sinus infections suck I agree, I've had my share.

+ lots. I have a marginally deviated septum, too little to need surgery but just enough that swelling caused by allergies can stuff up the works and result in a sinus infection. I get one or two a year that need a trip to the doctor. Such is life in Las Vegas

I guess I'll go to the walk-in clinic and see what he can do for me. I let my insurance expire.

Go to takecare.com and find the nearest takecare clinic...they are in Walgrens in most areas. They are cheaper than most. prescribe a lot of generics and the wait is usually nil unless you go at lunch or after 5. Just a suggestion.

As others mentioned, you need antibiotics whatever the going non resistant type is these days.

Take ALL of them.

No fun.

I looked up takecare and checked a little further and their advice on the matter was not to use antibiotics as you said earlier. Check it out it makes pretty good sense.

Now I'm really confused.

But I seem to be on the mend.

I think I'll go see a pro.
 
Get antibiotics at once if indicated, if they don't help in a couple of days revisit the clinic. Sinus infections are often deep seated and may be difficult to treat. Breathing steam and drinking warm liquids also often help drain the sinus cavities. Also, don't dismiss the idea the idea that in infected tooth may may also be involved as the sinus cavities are in close proximity to the upper jaw and infections do migrate. Professional evaluation is needed not internet medical advice.

If you are really unlucky..

You may have an apical abscess that has communicated with the maxillary sinus. It will keep recurring until the tooth is pulled or you have a root canal. There is only like 1/8th " of bone between your tooth root and the maxillary sinus.

Don't ask me how I know this..
 
They are not fun! I had one that went on for a couple of weeks. I was at my parents and laid down in my old bedroom. Woke up an hour later DROWNING! Both pillows were soaked, completely, with the drainage. Evidently the pressure built up to the point that it forced itself past the swollen areas.

Every spring, my wife has had serious sinus infections that we thought were allergies. They were treated with antibiotics and would go away. This year our doctor referred her to a nose Doc. He told her it was the same infection and the hair fever would trigger it. Evidently the bacteria were remaining in her cavities. They roto-rootered her nose and sinuses, did a rinse, packed her cavity with gauze and antibiotic and had her do a twice daily rinse after they removed the gauze. Within a week she was great (said she felt 100% better the morning after surgery.
 
I had this happen first time in my life, during the peak of allergy season. Did some travelling into a different locale, and the pollen count must have been off the charts (or different to where I am accustomed to).

Bottom line, I took Wal-greens version of Claritin, and IBU Profin, with an ice pack over my right eye.

I'd say within, 15 minutes or so, the swelling went down. After about 4-6hours my eye looked relatively normal. The following day it was fine.

Do what you feel is appropriate; this is just what worked for me in a comparable circumstance.

Modern-think is to never take an antibiotic unless you absolutely have to - or at least that is how it seems. That is probably a good idea. On the other hand, if you are miserable, I would say you are in the "have to" category. :D

I am no doc and don't like going to one any more than anyone else, but I have never been able to shake a sinus infection without medicine. Playing around with OTC nasal sprays and irrigation (I use a waterpick and plain old saltwater) does help, but for me, it just prolongs the inevitable.

Well, I just returned from the Doctor. 10 days of antibiotics and continue the irrigation and expectorant.

I wish to thank you all for pushing me to see the Doc. She said I would probably not have cured myself without the anti.b's.

For your info the stuff is called Amoxicillin 875 Mg. Twice a day.

No dairy as usual with AB's. Danged, I want a pizza.

I know exactly how you know this because I know it too, no fun but good dental health is important if you want to be free from sinus trouble. If you haven't been recently make an appointment to see your dentist.
 
yeah that one seems to crucify my face lately.
just might be one of those "as we grow older" things, it never bothered me before but now when it does bother me it does so with great flaming vengeance inspiring thoughts of making surgical use of a drill press to facilitate drainage, or at least new air holes

You and I are fellow travelers. I had one a couple of years ago. It started in a tooth that had an existing root canal and crown. I was having some off again, on again pain. I ask the dentist about it, and he sent me right to an endodontist. He started working within the existing crown, got up to the top of the old root, abutting the maxillary sinus. He then feared that he would do more damage than help, so in comes the oral surgeon. I had already been in the chair for an hour when he got there.

He took two more xrays, and told me he could handle it in the chair. He numbed me up some more, and made an incision into the gum above the crown. He found the infection, drained it, and did what I hope is a permanent repair. He put in a gutta percha seal, and then the endodontist finished up the root canal and crown repair.

I asked the oral surgeon why he used gutta percha, instead of some newer type of polymer. He replied that gutta percha would outlast any modern pollymer.

It took almost four hours total for the entire procedure. He even felt sorry for me and gave me a nice prescription for Oxycodone. After about two weeks, I went back for a checkup and more xrays. All was, and still is okay.

I was fortunate. Had the infection gotten into the maxillary sinus, I would have had an ENT doing some serious sinus surgery.

For those who don't know, gutta percha used to be used for golf ball covers.
 
Make sure you complete the course of treatment like you are OCD. My aunt did not, and had a hell of a mess. She ended up having to have her head opened up and her sinuses scooped out like a melon.
 
Another "hippie healer gypsie" (:>)))) that uses a neti pot to drain the sinus and help chase colds/flu way. Not sure how useful it would be if you already got serious infection.

Have had sinus headaches since being a kid, serious enough to take away balance and blow grits. Also had lots of tooth infections when older. Have not had any real serious ones since started with neti pot. Course ya gotta stick the thing up your nose and bend over the sink, but it works.

Had this exact event just before last Christmas. Tried to get the crud out with decongestants, antihistamines and saline but to no avail. Finally went to the docs the third week of January. Discovered I had been to see him on the same date in 2011 for the same complaint. He thought it was funny.:rolleyes:

SOP here in Vegas, too. When the gunk starts coming out you will think you have been breeding bad guys for the next Alien movie up there. Icky does not quite cover it. Mind you, when the pressure releases it is a wonderful feeling.
