Sippin Whiskey

Gang I'd like to get a bottle of good sippin whiskey. My paw taught me that term. You're supposed to sip at it, not take shots of it.

Also wanting to know how to drink it best. I usually just drink it room temp no ice and a splash of water but not sure how best.

I'll just mention things that can actually be bought in a normal shop these days. There is a lot of really good stuff that has become impossible to find due to pressure on the supply from the far East.

I like Willett Pot Still Reserve ( I dream of Jeannie bottle) for a nice, but not high alcohol (it is 45/47% if I recall).

In the same family, Rowan's Creek (bought one today) or Noah's Mill (have not seen one since November).

Better is Blanton's. But they price it high.

Maker's Mark has a 55% special bottling that is really nice.

Knob Creek and Woodford's Reserve are both excellent.

By the way, when it comes to water in whiskey, just a few drops is all you need to really make the flavor profile blossom.

Thank you I will try that. It burns my throat so I usually put about half water half whiskey... did not know that was too much.

IMHO the way a person drinks their whisky is a personal thing. There are some finer whisky's I drink neat and some I drink with a few ice cubes. It all depends on how you like it, the proof and heat of the individual whisky. I'd suggest trying all different ways until you find what you like best for each individual one.

As far as which kind, brand, version and age - again that's a personal thing. I am a Jack Daniels Single Barrel, Woodford's Reserve, Blanton's, Four Roses, Makers Mark etc. kind of guy. I love experimenting with new to me Bourbon's and do go to tastings on occasion.

On the other hand, if you leave a bottle of $1,000 Scotch at my house, believe me - it will be safe as I could never develop a taste for Scotch - regardless of how great it is to some. I just can't drink it!

If you want a really top end Bourbon to start off with, I'd start with Woodford's Reserve - excellent! If you like JD's try their Single Barrel. Both are around $50 bucks. If you want to spend less, Maker's Mark & George Dickel are very good too. I also like Devil's Cut (a Jim Beam product) on occasion. Again, try it different ways until you find how each one suites your pallet - no right or wrong. Enjoy!

My dad didn't drink alcohol, with one exception. He would keep a bottle of Crown Royal as a remedy for a sore throat, and would take a spoonful only and for only that purpose. We lost Pop 2 years ago, and so on Father's Day, Pop's birthday and the day he died I sip one shot of Crown Royal, straight up at room temperature in honor of my dad.

Oldest son gave me a bottle of Bookers, 128.5 proof. Very stout but smooth. A shot over ice goes down easy.

Evan Williams over ice is good enough for me. I was given a bottle of Evan Williams honey blend and really enjoy that. Not much of a drinker though. Will probably take me another 2 years finish those bottles off.

I prefer George Dickel Barrel Select just as it comes out of the bottle. Smooth is an understatement. Eagle Rare is also very good but it needs to breathe for a few days to be at it's best. It's one of those bourbons that tastes better a few days after the bottle has been open.

Of course the proper glass is a must, my Texas jigger is my favorite.

I like the blended whisky. So that puts me at Crown Royal. A little water sometimes does bring out the flavor. Other times a couple ice cubes will do it. Also like to leave a bottle in the freezer and when the urge hits, take a pull.{ I think God may drink Crown Royal}

Buffalo Trace. May be hard to find in Vegas but excellent bourbon. Switched to it from Makers Mark. Both are great. Over ice is all you need. Not sipping but I like mine with sprite or 7-Up.

Almost everybody's recommending a bourbon. Redbreast 12 is a very smooth and light 12 year old Irish whiskey that I think you'd like. Works well with a splash of water or just a single ice cube. Also very good neat.

I don't sip allot anymore but I can say that Whisky's, like beer, range all over the map in flavors and styles . For instance a good Bourbon is 100% different in character than a good Irish. Same is true for Canadian, American, Scotch....It's hard to compare across types as personal preference for the characteristics of one type over another come into play
Personally my tastes tend towards the lighter bodied Canadian and Irish styles. Here are a few that are not hard to find and won't break the bank.
In a Canadian , I'd suggest you try Crown Royal.
In a Irish, Tullamore Dew

Sorry, can't tell you much about Bourbon. Learned long ago that it made me dark and mean. I will not go there.

For Canadian blend - I urge all to try Forty Creek.

But, since I'm trying to drop a few pounds, have eschewed all adult libations for a time.
