Three kinds of whiskey in my household...

Rebel Yell dropped the Yell off of their name. I Emailed them and asked why they did this and they replied something I really did not understand. The new name is "Rebel" but the last time I looked for it I couldn't even find that. The first time I bought a bottle of Rebel Yell there was a picture of a Confederate calvary soldier charging with a saber. The whiskey was good, I guess the politics was not. Around 1968 they came out with a special Rebel Yell bottle celebrating Mississippi legalizing liquor. I've always wanted one of those bottles but haven't found one yet. Best deal I can get now is Military Blended Blended Whiskey at a little over $12.00 for a 1.75 liter bottle. It's pretty good but you have to be able to shop at a PX.

When I was a kid the cheapest booze was 10 High. Haven't seen it in years. Drank some of it, it was awful. Punished the beer for years but now at advanced age it's wine with dinner. Anyway Cheers to all my friends here on the forum.

When I read this whisky/whiskey thread the first think that popped into my head was Absalom.

One of these is my preferred poison. Being from Tennessee I've been taught Jack Daniels is just for tourists. George Dickel is a good pour on any occasion, the Single Barrel is superb, my top choice, but hard to find. Barrel Select is good too but less zing. Four Roses Single Barrel is a touch sweeter, excellent right out of a nice glass or a jelly jar.

PALADIN85020,

I always appreciate your opinion on most subjects. Regarding Tennessee Whisky, my recommendation would be George Dickel "white label" or the "blue label" barrel and bond.

My house is four miles from the George Dickel Distillery and twelve miles from Jack Daniels. Jack Daniels produces only two varieties that I can stand, Gentleman Jack and their Single Barrel.

I have had the pleasure of knowing the last two Jack Daniels Master Distillers and at least two or three of the last George Dickel Master Distillers. The bottom line, of course, is to drink and enjoy what you like. Life is to short to not to enjoy your favorite libation!

Never mass-quoted 3 posts before. Absalom pushed me over the George Dickel edge, to the point that I don't want to drink JD anymore. A problem, as I have over 100 bottles of JD from playing at the casino. And then, I recently read that JD is only good for mixing...

Sheepdawg, agree with you on the higher bonded grades of Dickel but they are difficult to come by in LV. I do have 3 bottles of the 2008 vintage, but I absolutely ADORE the standard Dickel 12. Only available recently in the 1.75L bottles, but I have a big house.

John,
I've got a boat-load of Bourbons in my liquor cabinet! I enjoy different brands at different times and while I have had almost all the brands available locally, I have never tried Rebel Yell. Don't ask me why, I just never got around to it - however you have challenged me to buy a bottle next time I go to the store.

Some of the Bourbons I enjoy (not in any particular order):

1)Jack Daniels Sinatra Select
2) Eagle Rare
3) Woodford's Reserve
4) Bib & Tucker
5) Michter's
6) Elijah Craig
7) Widow Jane
8) Jack Daniels Single Barrel
9 Jack Daniel's #7
10) Larceny
11) Wild Turkey Rare Breed
12) Wild Turkey 101
13) Basil Hayden
14) Booker's Single Barrel
15) 4 Roses Single Barrel

There are also a few I don't care much for:

1) Bulliet
2) Jim Beam
3) Knob Creek

Some I think are over rated and would not buy again:

Pappy Van Winkle
Blanton's

BTW - I too despise any and all Scotch!!!!! After trying to like it for many years, I gave up and will drink Ginger Ale before I drink Scotch! Blechhhh!

I too have a love of the golden nectar. I'm big on bourbon but I'm not prejudice I like all whiskey and whiskys. Currently I have over twenty open bottle of top shelf whiskeys. Prost.

My favorite bourbon for the money is Larceny. My favorite all time is Makers Mark Cask Strength.

While I won't declare larceny my favorite, I will agree it is excellent for the price. I do drink it on occasion and do use it when I make a Manhattan. :)

Boozing

The stuff probably killed all the germs.
My parent's drinking habits, were amazingly different. My dad was ¼ Native American, from your neck of the woods. He could uncap a bottle of beer, and be, inebriated. Mom's folks emigrated from Switzerland, and the menfolk constantly imbibed booze, but were never inebriated. Quite a contrast.

Unfortunately, it requires a substantial amount of booze to affect me. I couldn't afford to be a dedicated drunk.

Well Bourbon is quite useful to clean revolvers but for "smooth drinking" try to locate some Edradour single malt Scotch. Smallest distillery in Scotland and they sell both the 70 proof 10 year old single malt, but for "taste" look for their cask strength at around 120 proof. Must be "inhaled" without water or ice, only for non-bourbon or rye types as they will deplete the stock once they taste it. Dave_n

Nothing tops Blanton's for the best Bourbon....
Single Barrel and hard to find and I like the horse on the bottle.
And I'm a single Malt Islay Scotch guy with Ardbeg being the best!

I'm addicted to Islay malts as well, and always have a few on the sideboard, with Lagavulin being my favorite. Also usually have some Oban and Talisker on hand and, lately much to my surprise as I prefer the peatier/smokier malts, I've developed a taste for Cragganmore. Nothing wrong with Bourbon, but I find it a bit too sweet for my taste.

The worst that I can say I've had is Old Overholt. I like to try ones that are on sale. I couldn't find anything to mix it with that made it drinkable.

Very impressive. I've cut back quite a bit.

Vodka for bloody mary's
Templeton Rye for New Years Eve
Brandy for a birthday toast

oh, and Jameson for when the wife makes her world famous Irish Whiskey cake (which is not nearly often enough).

Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. Four Roses Small Batch. And my favorite is Elijah Craig. Most times mixed with ginger ale.
Ah, a man of culture in a thread recommending Jack and Jim.
...whisky/whiskey...
Simple rule of thumb: If the country's name does not have a "E" in it, neither does their whisky.

In my house it's Elijah or Four Roses Small batch for sipping, Bulleit for mixing. There are Irish and Scotch's for those that prefer them, and Sazarac Rye for anyone who wants a little bite in their dram.

In no particular order...

Elijah Craig Straight Rye
Angels Envy Rye
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Barrel
George Dickel 15 Year Single Barrel Select

Always in a glass on the rocks......and a good cigar!

Dickel 15 single Barrel is as good as it gets, the 9 year is also tasty. Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is superb too.

My deceased Dad bought Old Overholt by the case. He mixed it with spring water right out of the ground. I would sip a little of his while he was still here but never really got into it. Memories.
