I have to admit that I am a Bourbon lover - to me, Scotch sucks. I enjoy a fine gin now and then (Sapphire on the rocks with two olives makes a great Martini), but I particularly savor two brands of Bourbon.
First, I.W. Harper - unfortunately it's virtually unobtainable, as nearly all of their recent production is being shipped to quench the thirst of the Japanese.
Second, Rebel Yell - Also hard to get. Until yesterday, I had to order it shipped from an outfit in Los Angeles.
I.W. Harper was my dad's favorite. He was born in Kentucky, and was a Kentucky Colonel, as am I. Dad had discerning tastes, and he was right on the button with Harper.
Rebel Yell was recommended to me by the best friend I never met, an old gentlemen who assisted me in getting an old Leica camera overhauled in the San Francisco area; we corresponded by e-mail, but celebrated our birthdays with great liquors sent to each other. He, like my dad, is now gone.
My desperation to acquire these two fine Bourbon whiskeys came to an end yesterday. Hearing a commercial on the radio about a Phoenix store that bragged about having over 300 varieties of whiskey in stock, I paid them a visit. Voila! I now have the finest in my liquor cabinet again, with no sweat over replenishing my supply! Kudos to Total Wine and More in Phoenix - this pat on their back has been totally unsolicited, and I approved this message!
