Ok, Lucy ‘splain this to me

Some of the younger generations somehow have the idea that they know something the rest of us don’t know and this applies to about everything in life, not just the subject here. Sadly maybe the numbers are huge that just “don’t want to hear it”.

Ignorance of just how guns of various makes and models operate is hardly limited to young people. Plenty of older people walking around with major misconceptions

After all 50% of the people you meet have a below average knowledge of fire arms. HA HA, But, the thing is the top 5% really skews the average. once you hit 50% it goes down hill fast. I seriously doubt that even 20% of the population is very familiar with the 1911. Heck I bet at least a 1/3 of all revolver owners don't know that it is safe to have all the chambers loaded on modern revolvers or why it used to be unsafe.

Guys go in looking for ammo, don't know if they have a 357 sig or magnum. 38S&W, Super or 38 special, 303 Savage or British, which 9mm, which 300, which 7mm, that list is endless,

Then we have the AR14, my 300 mag shoots flat to 500 yards, the guys who crank out a round after emptying their gun by only removing the magazine, 3" shells fit in my old shotgun just fine (2 3/4" chambered). It was dead on when I put it away 3 seasons ago, no need waste ammo to sight it in again. I keep a gun in my purse (along with 25# of other stuff)

My mother in law doesn't believe in permit less carry, yet, believes she is just fine carrying a gun, because she shot some when she was younger. Yet, she has a very limited knowledge of gun laws. "I don't care what you say, I won't go to jail if I get caught with one in my car in California"

Being a known "gun guy" in a "gun state" I have had some interesting conversations and heard some even more interesting statements. I can only imagine how interesting working a gun counter could be.

Unfortunately there are a lot of dead people due to gun ignorance

Please allow me to be the first to confess my ignorance and indifference of black plastic striker fired bullet squirters with staple gun triggers.

I don't know and I don't want to know.

Having been a NRA firearms instructor for 20+ years many years ago women Are Much Easier to “instruct” than men. Having worked on and driven just about every vehicle the Army had in the 70s, on Army pistol team and assisted the armorer and then 40 years in machine tools Im pretty happy….

Most don't know the difference between a push rod and a connecting rod, yet they still drive.

You don't need to know the intricate details of how something works to use it.

As far a scoffing at someone's ignorance, remember that everyone starts at zero and learns along the way. The kid that bought the Sig wasn't suddenly imbued with knowledge of 1911s as soon as he took delivery.

There are a lot of different types of guns and expecting every firearm owner to know all of them is folly.

I agree with you to a point. An individual has no need to understand how ALL weapons work (though even basic knowledge is a good thing from a safety perspective), however I firmly believe anyone who carry’s a deadly weapon has a responsibility to know how THEIR weapon works. Lack of such knowledge can have lethal consequences for both the owner and any bystanders in the area. There is a huge difference between ignorance and stupidity. You can fix ignorance through education-you can’t do anything with stupid. Whenever someone buys a firearm they need , at a minimum, a crash course in how THAT weapon works. The fact that these guys had noconcept that thei weapon was “ fully cocked” tells me they were at best ignorant and at worst stupid. I surely would not want to be around when they were handling their weapons…

I fully agree about the ladies being easier to train. I’ve had great experiences teaching women and young boys to shoot. Men, esp young men, are usually a lot tougher, primarily because they don’t listen. They seem to think they have a John Wayne/Rambo/John Wick gene ( depends on their age😊) that gives them knowledge of how a weapon works😳.

Way back in 1967 I made a trip to Colorado with two friends in the pickup truck that belonged to oldest of our trio. He was an experienced hunter, having made many trips out west for Pheasants mostly. He had a Winchester model 70 in .300 Winchester mag for those "600 yd shots" for western Mule deer. When we got to our destination we went to a range to sight in our rifles but the model 70 guy had a problem. His ammo would not chamber. I looked at it and told him why. He had .300 H&H ammunition. Fortunately there was a gun shop in town and he was able to get .300 Winchester ammo.

People are not stupid, as a rule. Most learn to be stupid over time, usually as a result of frustration over life sucking; a consequence of repeated poor choices. Folks born in the 21st century are further enstupidated by having unfettered access to vast quantities of information spewed out of their handheld devices resulting in a certainty that they have acquired godlike enlightenment above all others. $.02. seems some here think that if I carry a gun, I should know everything about every gun.
If someone knows how to safely operate their gun, knows all the buttons, levers ect. knows all the safety rules that's good enough for me. why do they need to know how another gun works.
If I know how to shoot a bow and thats what I hunt with why do I need to know about cross bows?
Now I do agree if you don't know you shouldn't open your mouth other to ask questions and get educated.

All kind of firearms out there. I grew up with a machinist/gunsmith father, been to FA instructor school, Sig and Glock armourer schools and taught on a police academy range for eighteen years. But still, long retired and still active as a RSO on a club range, rifles and pistols show up that I'm, "What the heck is that? Whoa, is it really safe? How do you load it? "

Now I know if I messed around with it, I'd figure it out soon enough. But asking is a shortcut to enlightenment.

I’ll admit, I’m uneducated regarding glocks and such and am satisfied to remain so. One day at the range I belong to a young man and his mother had shot or attempted to shoot a VERY Nice BHP the grandfather left the young man( about 20ish). They exited the range as I was about to go in. They asked the guy at the counter about the BHP. He or anyone else knew about them but He Knew I did so he referred them to me. I gladly took them aside, showed them how to disassemble it for cleaning and explained its function. BHP Really needed a serious cleaning and touch up of feed ramp of barrel. Range has a gunsmith now but he’s really into glock,SIGs ect. and calls me if he gets a 1911.

I am by no means “tacticool, but I witnessed something that I just can’t figure out. I am however an “experienced” guy, having started hunting with my Dad 66 years ago. I’ve been shooting handguns since 1970, and have over the years carried pretty much every single day for more than 4 decades,so I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday. Anyway I’m in the LGS bs’ing with the guys on a cold January morning. Two mid 30’s dudes come in and are oohing and drooling over the stuff in the case. A 50ish guy comes in, goes to the counter and buys a couple boxed of .45 acp. As he reaches for his wallet his vest opens enough to clearly show a 1911, cocked and locked, in a owb holster. No big deal. When he leaves the two young guys immediately go into a “did you see that”, “he was carrying a Cocked pistol”, “man, that’s scary ****”. (I’ve got a c&l EMPunder my sweatshirt while this is going on🙄). The guy from the gun shop then says “what are you carrying Charlie” to which young Charles responds “my Sig 365, appendix carry”😳. The shop guy then says “ so it’s dangerous to carry a cocked and locked 1911 in an open holster, but it’s safe to carry a cocked and Unlocked striker gun shoved down the front of your pants”? This led to some😳 looks and muttering, followed by the classic “ but it won’t go off unless you pull the trigger”. Shop owner “no, but neither will the 1911, and then only After you grip the pistol And after you drop the safety”. The guys were totally in the dark, esp concerning their OWN weapon. Why don’t people bother to actually learn about the weapon they carry rather than just what they’ve been told/read by someone equally in the dark? I truly don’t care what anyone carry’s but at least know the pros and cons of YOUR choice😊,

About 99% of the public is remotely unaware of the proper ways to carry or even handle guns. Watch the folks all the time at the range in in the LGS and just shake my head. The only way I will say anything is if muzzles get pointed in the wrong directions. No use to try to teach how to handle a firearms..........they watched to many TV shows, to many movies and listened to the news folks for to long.
