SKUNKED

Hi:
Let the puppies out in the backyard at twilight. Yard has a four foot picket fence surrounding it. One of the pups ran barking over to a ceder tree, yelled and came running back, rubbing its face on the grass. A strong odor of smoke/garlic came along. Right in the back door and all though the house ran the pup. When finally caught the pup had a yellow stain on the right side face and ear. Luckly we had purchased a container of "Skunk-Off"at Tractor Supply in the past. Pup ok but still attempting to rid the house of the smell.
The smell is nothing like I have smelled after a snunk hit by a vehicle.
Still trying to find where the snunk entered the backyard.

There is nothing worse to get rid of than skunk residue. Time will do it though.

We have a two year old border collie that's been skunked three times. If it moves a border collie is pretty much going to bark at it or chase it, even if it's a skunk.

A co-worker of mine had the unfortunate instance of a skunk getting into his house through his doggy door. He awoke at 2:00 a.m. just in time to see his dog attack the skunk in the corner of his living room. Needless to say, the skunk sprayed everything and everybody around.

He tried all kinds of things to get rid of the odor but nothing worked. He was so despondent he even considered just burning the house down. Someone finally came up with a remedy that worked. He took a large inexpensive frying pan and filled it with sugar. He put the pan on the stove at a medium heat and just let the sugar burn. The house was all closed up and the smell of the burnt sugar was pretty unpleasant by itself. After most of the sugar had burned he opened up the house and let it ventilate. The smell of the burnt sugar disipated rather quickly and surprisingly, most of the skunk smell was gone also. It even took the smell out of his clothing, curtains, etc.

Just be sure to use a cheap frying pan that you don't care about as you will ruin the pan.

The best thing to remove skunk odor is a mix of dish soap, baking soda, and peroxide, this obviously can't be marketed because of the extreme foaming of the peroxide and baking soda but it's a great home made remedy.

This brought back memories of a deer hunting trip in Utah several years ago. Mike slept in the cook tent while others were in another tent. I was in my camper as nobody could stand my snoring. About midnight Mike came knocking on the camper door with his sleeping bag on his shoulder. He asked to sleep in my camper as a skunk was eating the soda crackers in the cook tent. I didn't blame him & hope he slept thru my snoring. I remind him of that every once in a while.

Once, my good buddy Butch (a rather hyperactive German Shorthair) decided to courageously rid the garage of a skunk that was paying a visit. Als, his rather impressive one-shake dispatch of the skunk was not enough to prevent said skunk from getting the last laugh. Thankfully, it was just days prior to my birthday, and the good wife had a brand new pressure washer hid away. We broke it out for the occasion, as well as a few gallons of peroxide/baking soda/dish soap concoction and managed to make the place bearable. Old Butch, however, managed to carry trace of this perfume for quite some time (especially when damp)...and I think he liked it!

I remember one time many many years ago. My brother had borrowed Dad's car and came home late one night, and locked a skunk in the garage. Took a loooooong time to get that smell out of the garage, and even longer to get it out of Dad's car!

The formula that was given to me by a veterinary group is:
1 quart of 3% peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
Bath the dog and rinse with plain water.

This works wonders. It will even remove the smell from the house if you wash down the areas the dog got up against. Good luck!

Skunks and NRA hats

I really don't know which is worse! I received a hat and I really don't know what to do with it. Maybe give it to one of our resident illegals? Had a Doberman that got skunked at least once a year. Nothing worse than trying to bathe a 90 pound Dobie that has been skunked. As smart as they are, you'd think they would learn. Have a 7 year old Border Collie that is yet to get it! OOPS! probably shouldn't have written that!

MAYBE try attaching the NRA hat to the Doberman...I think a laughing skunk is unable to fire!

My wifes father reciently died at age 93. He was a ourdoorsman all his life and was full of woods and wildlife stories. One day we were talking about skunks and he said that if you shoot a skunk with a 12ga, he well spray everytime and make a big stinking mess. BUT, if you shoot a skunk through the chest with a 22cal rifle, he well just go away and die without spraying. I do not know how true all this is but I do know the part about the 12ga is correct.

Fun & Games at 10pm

Our 1.5yo Golden tangled w/the striped kitty last nite. Watched it go down, she would not "come", just having too much fun!!
Thanks to this thread I used the baking soda-peroxide-dish soap therapy
(which was not viewed as great fun). Followed by a full bath under the hose and finally a session w/the blow drier. She's not quite odor free, one of her front feet still retains a bit of odor, must have gotten a direct hit there.
Today she'll go for an extended swim in the ocean, hope that will close the door on this adventure.
We had been putting a shock/training collar on her for nitely nature calls until recently, guess it goes back on.

Well I am bringing this forward. My wife said there is 3 young skunks eating her garden. She has been shooting at them with my pellet gun but does not have the strength to pump it up to KILL level.
She went to a convention this weekend and my niece was watching the dogs. Wife told her to to keep the dogs on the leash when outside. Nope, she let them loose and now 5 dogs need the treatment!! I found this thread and called my wife and hope it works.
I am in Kandahar and not able to eradicate the skunks. Hopefully our local pest control can remove them.

One of my operators lives in upstate NY. Comes in for the day watch and stinks to high hevan of skunk. Seems when he went to the car he suprised one and the little critter get him, his lunch bag and the car. He had to wash what he had on, same for his lunchbag and take the carto the car wash. Lesson learned, when you get up at 4:30am open your eyes as the next victim my be you. Frank

Well here is an update, my wife was sitting out on the back porch and the skunks show up again. She was pretty mad about our dogs being sprayed so she grabbed the pellet gun and shot one!! The skunk drops dead in its tracks(or so she thought)! The next morning she steps outside and it is gone. I told her to CAREFULLY check under the portable building to see if it had crawled under there to die. She took a quick glance and did not see anything. She told me that we need to get a different gun, my sheridan is a pump action and she could only get it pumped up 4 times.
I have been with this woman 40 years and is the first time she ever shot an animal!

Believe it or not, but what works best on skunked dogs is FDS!!
(Female Deoderant Spray). I now keep two aerosol cans of FDS in the laundry room.
Wimpman (Jimmy) sends his wife in the store to purchased this items.

A single shot .22 rifle with CB caps works great.

I told my wife to stop and get some of that FDS, she got real suspious as to how I knew it would work!! If my son let her into the safe she would be slightly surprised at how those guns multiplied!! We live in a subdivision in the county and occasionally we hear gun fire so I don't thik anyone would would care. If the 22 cb's are real quiet I will recommend trying those. What is the range on these shells? I live on an acre of land.
