I pocket carry my 442 as much as I can. Anyone think that pocket carrying during the night would be OK? It would seem to offer a quicker response to a threat than opening up my gun safe. That's my only other option because I have a kid in the house. Any thoughts. Be kind.

I don't see any bad side to it, or potential dangers, other then rolling over on it and having it stick you in the hip (or worse). But there are holsters designed to go along side the bed...they have a horizontal portion (like a flat board) that fits between the matress and box spring and a holster hangs down from that. If you cahn get a hand between the head of your bed and the wall, that might be the ticket. I've never owned one or even saw one, but I have seen them advertised.

Hey,
I've got a Model 442 in one dresser and a Glock 23 with a SLR-1 Light mounted to the accessory rail in the other chest of drawers. God forbid I should ever have the need I am able to access in short order. I have given some thought to those bedside holsters but haven't don the research yet. i also place that 442 next to me at night while watching TV or on the Laptop..., home invasions are becoming more popular and I wouldn't want my wife subjected to the nasty things that may happen should I not be ready to go. My son is a local Police Officer and he too harbours these same sentiments!
Stay Safe...

No problem at all, just keep it in a holster. I suspect a lot of folks keep 'em in bed with them, rather than exposed for a crook to find on a nightstand or such.

In bed

I find it hard to believe you would sleep with a load gun. Excuse me but it sounds rather dangerous.

A 442? Sounds to me a LOT safer than the alternatives, especially with a kid in the house. If it's not uncomfortable, I think it's a great way to keep a gun at night. Do you know that the gun will not come out of your pocket?

It rides in a DeSantis Superfly pocket holster. Pretty sure it will stay in my pocket.

Be Careful! It might go off and hurt you there!

I sleep with a 640-1 with lasergrips on it.
Glaser safety slugs inside. Good common sense home defense.

Personally, I wouldn't sleep with a loaded gun.

I keep a Secure-It gun case next to my bed for my carry gun.
- I leave the gun in that case (unlocked and open; with my keys in the lock*) when I'm home and do NOT have the gun on me, such as when I'm sleeping.
- I leave the gun in that case and locked if I have to to a gun-free zone.
- I leave the case empty when carrying.

Depending on your kids, it may work for you.

*The keys stay in the lock on the case anytime it's open; just to make sure I don't drive off without locking up the gun when going to a gun-free zone.

I hope this doesn't sound insensitive to your kids but have you considered locking your bedroom door at night? that way you can have a reg size gun on the nightstand, or in a drawer hidden.

you could still hear if you were needed in another part of the house and just explain to your kids that all they have to do is knock at anytime of the night if they need you. i'm sure they know that knocking rule anyway. (no disrespect intended)

just a thought because I would rather have a more manageable gun if i were to wake up in the middle of the night startled half to death and needing to be dead on with my aim.

Thread title is begging for a one-liner from sipowicz. ;)

Try a cheap IWB belt clip holster on one of the mattress rope handles. Simply pull up the bottom sheet to access your pistol otherwise it's concealed and pointed at the floor. I don't worry too much about break-ins. Besides, by the time a burglar wakes me up and I find my glasses and flashlight he's probably already made off with the TV, stereo and wood stove. Mike

I used to have a ankle holster wrapped around the headpost of our bed with a 2" S&W #10 in it. You can also hang a shoulder holster off a bed post to keep the handgun handy. I used to camp alot, many years ago, and wore a shoulder holster at night, it was comfortable enough in a sleeping bag.

When i was younger and had my drag race car parked outside i slept with a 12ga shotgun near my bed within arms reach along side the bed. I woke up in a dream with it in my hands onetime. Luckily it wasn't chambered. This was 40 years ago. My point is becareful were we leave loaded guns.

My dogs are my alarm now before i make a move. I still have a gun closeby but not so close to the bed now. My kids are gone now. Bill

I did this once when I was sleeping somewhere I wasn't completely comfortable with. It made me feel a little better having the gun on me. Normally when I'm concerned about the hotel I'm in, I put it in my boot. A crook breaking in might look in a lot of places but he probably won't search your shoes.

Kids

Depends on your kids...too many times a six gun is picked up and fired by an untrained and unauthorized person. Happened to me once. I'd go for a quick access safe. Some mistakes you cannot recover from.

I would be reluctant to sleep with a gun like that. When I was about 19 I had a bed with a book case headboard. I would lay my revolver on the shelf above my head at night. One time I woke up in the middle of the night and discovered my revolver had somehow made its way to underneath my pillow and the hammer was cocked. That was quite a shocker. It is usually best to have your gun somewhere that requires you to get out of bed to get it unless you have some physical situation that makes that impractical.

In the past many times people would nail a holster to the back of the headboard. Now they make those lock boxes with a touchpad to access the gun. They are not a bad idea. My wife keeps her pistols in one. She has a Model 10 for home and a Ruger LCP for going out. I wonder if she could really get her gun in the dark, without her glasses, while she is having an adrenaline dump. I would guess not. When I am out of town she sets her Model 10 out and locks the bedroom door and sleeps with the dog.

A 442 is a poor weapon. It is a back up gun, not a gun one would choose if something else were available. Almost anything is more powerful and carries more ammo than a J frame. If you choose a magazine fed gun you could have the gun and mag separate and still bring the gun into play quickly. Most kids can not rack the slide of an auto pistol anyway but I am not sure how old your kids are.

I would encourage you to select a shotgun or pistol caliber carbine like a Beretta Storm for home use. There is no reason to use a pistol. It only takes a second to slip the mag into a gun or even load a shotgun. A J frame is a small gun in the best of times and in the worst it will seem to shrink even more.

I have raised three kids knee deep in guns and never had a problem. I get an 870 out of the safe when I get home and lock it up when I leave. They have never bothered it. You can gun proof your kids.

If you place a sho' nuff gun out of reach of the bed you will have a second to be fully awake before you pick it up and when you do you will have a weapon far superior to a J frame. Usually if you are having to sleep with a gun within arms reach you are in a war. I live in a high crime area and have for many years but I still think I can stand up and take a couple steps to my gun and be OK. Any dog should alert you to prowlers soon enough to react.

First thing I'd make sure I had a good belt on my PJ's if I was going that route.
