I noticed today that there is movement between the slide and the frame when the action is closed. I can see this movement when I grip the gun via the grip and with the other hand push the muzzle in any direction.

I am not sure if this is an issue or just an observation of a fact of life for this type of firearm.

The gun is a 40L CORE.

All mine do it. Don't know if yours is excessive since I don't have it in my hands but the M&P is designed loose so that dirt and crud won't jam up the action.

Its just a fact of life with polymer guns.
If it bothers you, you can always peen the slide to tighten it up. I've done it one one of my old G34's.

On my XDm, I noticed a good bit of play between the slide and frame, up towards the front, that wasn't there when it was new. It seemed like quite a bit to me. I took the slide off the frame and and placed a large rubber band over the end of the frame and used a heat gun to heat up that part of the frame. Not a lot of heat, just enough to warm it up good and not melt the rubber band. Let it cool, down and reassembled it. That took the play out.

Also, I observed that the play was only present when the pistol was cocked. When not cocked, it was solid.
