Slight Problem with My Right Hand

Barb,
I hope it gets better, or has an easy cure.
Smack the hardheads with your other hand for a while.

You and your family are in our prayers, Barb.

Btw, it is a proven fact that people shoot better with their off hands. I guess when shooting with it, more time is taken to concentrate than usual.

As for computers, get one of those voice activated typing programs. They do drive other people around you nuts though...I swore that I was going to give a good, old country whipp'n to gentleman in a restaurant one day when he kept dictating into a microphone attached to his blackberry thing while I was trying to have a quiet lunch one day.

On second thought, just outsource your knitting and moderating out of the country.

I tried the suggestion on the Mrs., but she didn't go for it for some reason.

Btw, she said "Thank you so very much!"
(I'm going to surprise here and take her to Olive Garden.

Didn't intend to overlook Barb, sorry! Hope you can get it figured out and rectified soon.

Thanks for all the insights! I gave up the knitting and crocheting but I just started a new counted cross-stitch of a tiger. I staved off carpal tunnel from years of heavy typing by doing hand and wrist flex exercises and would rather approach this non-invasively, if at all possible.

The finger, though, doesn't stay clenched and I have full flexibility. The closest thing I can find on the internet that matches the symptoms is "subluxation or dislocation of the extensor tendons" but everything I read about it is geared toward professionals.

Andy, I hope Olive Garden helped!

I gave up the knitting and crocheting
I don't know what I'd do if I had to give up being crochety. But it's not gonna get better until you stop beating your husband. Or at least use a lighter stick!

BarbC,

For what is worth, I notice an increase in in muscular spasms as I get older (58 last Oct.) and am also on Lipitor.

Are there any medications you take on a regular basis that might be contributing to your experience?

When my physician tried to increase my Lipitor to a higher dosage I had some real problems with aching and increased muscular spasms. He lower the dose and I was better.

Hope things improve.

I'm not on any medications at all and am in good health.

I don't want to hear any of this "aging" crap either.

Then you are most fortunate and please notice I did not mention age (other than my own) cause I know you are too young for any other comment.

Barb, to paint the picture of what a trigger finger is I'm going to use the analogy of a bicycle brake cable.

If you had a small fat spot on the cable (analogous to your flexor tendon) close to where it enters the sheath it will get stuck at the entrance of the sheath (analogous to the retenaculum that holds the sheath to the bone) The tendon gets stuck where the fat part of the tendon interfaces with the retenaculum. Only when you squeeze the brake REAL HARD will it pass. When it does pass, it will shoot through that point rapidly.

In your hand, only when the force reaches a threshold that overcomes the resistance can it pass...in fact it snaps/sling shots through that choke point. The fat spot in the tendon is caused by repetitive friction at that point where the tendon/retenaculum meet (over-use...right Shugart

Hope that helps in understanding the problem.

Barb,

I started experiencing pain, in my hands, at 37. Rheumatoid Arthritis often starts in your thirties.

A simple bloodtest, at your regular check up, can verify. I hope that is not it, but early treatment saves joint damage.

I hope I am wrong, good luck!

I agree with all those that diagnosed it as Trigger Finger. I had this in my right hand thumb. It caused the end of the thumb up to the first joint to go over backwards. The pain was @#%!!. An experienced Orthopedic Surgeon did a great job and I have a 100% recovery. I had this done last June, just after I returned form shooting Prairie Dogs, and handling the guns for several days caused me "several" episodes of discomfort. Don't put it off, it is an outpatient procedure, usually under a Local Anesthetic.
