87 today. I misheard the phone message my buddy left me, and thought he had died, but not so. In my youth I used to make fun of him for his TV ads, but came to appreciate him.

His version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" is my favorite of all vocal renditions of that much-covered classic. With all the Sturm und Drang that often attends that song, it takes real cojones to sing it in falsetto.

Congratulations, Slim.

I remember the movie in which Earth was invaded by aliens. Someone finally discovered that playing a Slim Whitman song made the aliens' heads explode.

Slim Whitman has a wonderful voice and was a resident of this area for a long time, working during the days and appearing on the Louisiana Hayride on the weekends and playing the bar circuit at night. Yet he never really achieved the star status that most of the entertainers here did.

He got invited to go to England and found he was a big hit over there and I suppose he made a lot of money while there.

Both he and Elvis had the same manager and both were discovered while singing at the LA Hayride.

Pat Buttram was interviewed on a show about Green Acres. He said that he based Mr. Haney on a guy that he worked with in a carnival.
That guy was Col. Tom Parker.
Pat said that Parker might not be able to sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo but he'd sure give it a heck of a try.

God bless Slim! Always enjoyed listening to his unique voice. The Brits idolized the man, no doubt about that. I especially enjoyed the many Hank Williams, Sr. songs Slim covered over the years.

This one will give you guys goosebumps. I believe it's from the early 1970's Midnight Special TV show, and Andy Kaufman was the host that night. Check out Kaufman's expression, he's truly in awe

His voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Funny story about Slim, though.
I'd been after my sweetheart to marry me for a long time, but she wasn't convinced that I was the type to stick around through thick or thin, and she kept turning me down. We were at a wedding reception and the DJ put on Slim Whitman. Knowing how I feel about him (and dancing) she teased me by saying he made her feel like dancing. Well, I don't know why, but I got up and said "lets dance, then". After that dance, she whispered to me, "If you're willing to dance to Slim Whitman with me, then I guess you really do love me." We were married the next March, and have been ever since.

I once collected LP albums, mostly for the 60s/70s album art. I ended up with over 1,000 and decided most should go. I classified them by genre and advertised them on Ebay.

There were examples of all the great 60s and 70s artists.

Which ones sold immediately?

The 6 Slim Whitman's to a buyer in Japan who wanted and paid for overnight air shipping.

The albums went for $15 apiece and the shipping was $86.75.

A little known fact....33-1/3 LP albums are 1 foot square and weigh 1 pound (this does not include doubles and any with photo inserts)

I wish I had kept them.

???Maybe??? But he is not listed in the credits. Slim Pickens played the character "Taggart." Been so long since I seen it I had to check on IMDB...I dont remember yodeling in the campfire scene but then again who in the heII remembers yodeling anyway??

the only yodeling by the campfire i remember from blazing saddles was coming from thei backsides.
