Sling Attachment question on M&P AR-15 Sport

Hey Gang,
I just bought a new (my first one) M&P AR-15 sport. I wanted to put a single sling on it. I noticed that there is what looks to be a sling attachment under the butt stock nut It goes around the threaded shaft & is teardrop shaped. In the bottom of the lower portion of the teardrop is a hole that is about 7/16" or 3/8". My question is; is that really a sling attachment ring which can be turned to either side then retighten or is this just a washer under the butt stock nut?

If I'm understanding you, it's just a plain ole' sling attachment for a two point sling. If you want to put a ring on there for a sling point sling, the Sport in Mil Spec.
