Small scope project

I've decided to start a small project. I currently have a 1X3 magnification Bushnell Phantom handgun scope mounted on my model 29 (8 3/8"). The mount has been held on by one measly 3X56 screw which believe or not has been more than enough to hold it in place. Since I am planning on using a NcStar green/red dot with a laser which is a bit heavier, I'll need to mount a Weigand scope mount. This will require drilling and tapping the upper portion to accept three 6X48 screws. Since I might at sometime want to go back to the iron sights I plan on drilling only 2 additional holes and leaving the original 3X56 as is. This will mean that only two screws will hold the mount in place, which I hope will be strong enough. With me so far?

Instead of loading everything up and heading to my local range I've decided to do the initial adjustments at home. I sent for a 44 magnum laser boresight which should get me in the ballpark. Then head to the range and hopefully just have to fine-tune the scope.

Hopefully it'll be an improvement if not, back to the drawing board. All parts are on order so I'll keep adding to this post as things progress.

There it is. I'd appreciate any feedback Or suggestions. Good or bad... tell me I'm crazy.

I don't see any obvious issues........it sounds like a plan to me. Good luck, and remember to Make Haste Slowly.

I have several NcStar (IER) scopes on my Marlins, and they make awesome scout scopes. Eye relief is Ten inches, I'm betting you need about 20 on a handgun.
 
The boresighting should get you on paper. That is what I do whenever mounting a scope, boresight it and get the windage alignment centered and put the elevation alignment a couple inch's low (I am doing this at my 10 meter basement range). Then fine tune it at the distance appropriate at the range.
 
if it were me id drill the 3x56 to 6x48 then drill the old iron sight mount to fit the new screw

It's back to the drawing board. The scope arrived and I was rather disappointed in it. It was just way too small, only about 3 inches long and just about impossible to sight through. I'm also having second thoughts about drilling the additional hole in the frame. Since I don't think one screw will hold the adapter and the scope in place, I'm going to try using the rear sight hole for additional support. It's a slotted hole so it's going to be an interesting task. Fabrication time.. woo hoo!
