I might be soon working for another company - they will be providing a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson "something".

Don't know which one yet.

Question is - any .40 S&W out there that no one would recommend???

I don't know about but a few of the ones available and never heard any bad press on any except for several negative comments against the Sigma.

I know a couple guys who own the Sigma and like it & wonder if it's just an unjustified prejudice against it from those who never even shot \ owned one??

S&W's .40s are all generally excellent guns. Some people don't like the snappy nature of the .40's recoil, but that's more of a cartridge issue than a pistol issue. Most people who talk trash about the Sigma either own a Glock, have never fired a Sigma, or both. The trigger is heavy but does smooth out with dry firing by all accounts. I don't own a Sigma but I have tried a few and haven't had any trouble with accuracy or function.

The S&W M&P .40 is one of the finest auto loaders on the market today. Count yourself lucky if you are provided with one.

The Sigma SW40VE is no slouch either. I own one and actually did some smithing on the trigger and brought the trigger pull to into the range of a Glock or XD (Still a long DA pull, but it is easy and smooth.). For the price you could not find a better composite .40cal auto.

i have just been issued a M&P .40 to replace my 6946, i have to say i wanted a Glockwhen they took my M-64 and still wanted one this time too. the 6946 has earned my respect and has never had a hiccup, it is very accurate and has a sweet DAO action. as a Glock guy, I didn't want to like the M&P but it really seems pretty slick all in all. anyhow if your .40 is in the 59 or 69 series you should be well served i can't speak a lot about the M&P because i haven't qualified on it yet and they specifically ordered (me) not to "take it out for a spin" before they get me qualified on it. all i can do is look at it until sometime in December. Grrr...
anyhow i would probably be against a sigma or a SW99? (the walther gun)i heard Jersey SP had major troubles with theirs but given my track record with the 6946 i guess i'd have to just shoot the crap out of whatever they give you until you trust it and be dilligent with the maintenance (and carry a decent backup anyway if you can)
Regards,
Rich

I have a Sig P229R and I love it I have never had any problems with it. I am sure tho there are many more that are good also, so I would say it is a matter of preference. If you are going to be given the choice of what you have I would go to a range that rents and try several to see which one suited my needs best.

I'm with gglass. Both the Sigma & the M&P are great guns. The Sigma requires a slight amount of trigger polish work and it becomes much smoother and completely reliable.
I prefer the M&P. Smooth, shorter trigger. A much better design. Most accessories will fit the M&P . The Sigma has a very short list of what fits the rail system.

I own a Sigma 40VE and totally love it. It is my first semi-auto so not a whole lot to compare it to. But I did try it out side by side with a XD40 and really not much difference except for the XD has more safety features. The trigger is long and hard on a Sigma but no more than a 686 .357 and it's the only safety on the gun. My Sigma gets about 200 rounds a week at the range through it and NEVER EVER a problem with FTF, FTE, no stovepipe, nothin'. It just loves to shoot. Even shot light load reloads, no worries mate! I definately trust it with my life. The only issue I can foresee in the future is the rod might have to get upgraded to ss. The factory one is the same polymer as the frame. Never heard of one breaking yet, but it couldn't hurt.

The current SIGMAs are great, as are the M&Ps. You won't go wrong with any current S&W 40 caliber pistol.
