Smith 4506 Extractor Question

I'm viviting a friend and have an extractor question. He has a 4506 ser #TDK480X and we're trying to get an extractor from Numrich. Ordered item # 347720 and it doesn't fit - it's shorter and narrower than the original. The "factory" extractor we want to replace looks the same as on my 745, but every schematic on Numrich seems to show the shorter, thinner one - which one should we order?

The one ordered and received, although it looks shorter and thinner does seem to fit, as in the pin hole and extractor lip do line up. But it looks like hell and doesn't fill the slot.

And THAT is why I no longer order parts from Numrich. I ordered a set of grips for my 4506-1 and they sent me grips for a 1076 with the frame mounted decocker. Next I ordered a recoil spring guide rod and I got one for a 4" barrel gun, it probably was for a 4006.

Try S&W, if they no longer have any, check the auction websites for parts.

I second checking with S&W. I know for 9mm 59XX series 3rd gens the gun has to be sent in to the factory for extractor replacement, as the part isn't even sold to third party gunsmiths.

AFAIK S&W will not sell an extractor to just anybody, it is classed as a factory fitted part. I believe this is due to the fact that they use different springs to get the correct tension and this requires special gauges to confirm. In other words like the 1911 the S&W extractors are not really field replaceable parts. I wonder if they just need the slide to replace the extractor? That would save a bunch on shipping.

Thing is, the extractor on the schematic looks like the one they sent, but it clearly is not the correct style extractor. I checked the 745 schematic, a gun I have (it uses the longer, wider extractor same as the 4506) but they show it pictured exactly the same as the one on the 4506 - so I hesitate to order the extractor for the 745 because it will most likely se the same incorrect part.

Your friend's 4506 needs a new extractor? I'd call S&W and ask about having them repair the gun.

While I've never handled the extractor for the 745, it's a different part number than the THREE extractors listed for the 4506 (1 standard part and 2 optional parts). One of the 4506 extractors (#235690000) is the standard/current extractor for 3rd gen .45's such as the 4513/63/66TSW's.

Even if you were to get your hands on the extractor, though, it's not like it's a "drop-in" part (even if you know to remove the extractor pin with a starter punch, since they're typically hard to get started moving, followed by a regular straight shank pin punch, removing the pin downward and then reinstalling it from the bottom).

The extractors typically require some filing on the adjustment pad of the extractor, and then the resulting critical dimension is checked with a factory (armorer tool) extractor bar gauge for the caliber (with the extractor in the slide). (There's a 3rd gen .45 extractor bar gauge, and a SW1911 extractor bar gauge, BTW.) The spring tension is checked with a force dial gauge ($150 tool), also with the extractor installed in the slide, when deflection of the extractor is observed.

Unless you know a gunsmith familiar with S&W pistols, who has the right tools ... or you know a local S&W 3rd gen armorer ... I'd call the factory or an authorized S&W service center and ask about having the 4506 examined and repaired by them.

Over the years.I've had the same problem with Numrich. It's hit or miss if you will actually get your correct part. I imagine there is someone who picks the parts and is either unhappy with his job,or just plain could care less...
The few times I've called them that was the impression I always got. As far as selling them old parts-forget it. They offer you next to nothing for them. About 15 years ago, I started putting my old S&W parts in a tackle-box and have been glad that I did. At least I still have 'em around if I need 'em!
