Is a 586-3 with a round butt and 6 inch barrel a rarer version of the 586? I picked one up in a trade deal. Was happy to do the trade but not real happy with the round butt as I am a square but fan. Anyways I started looking around and can't find another round butt in 6 inch. None of the books I have mention anything about it either. Any info would be great.
thanks

The 586-3 is supposed to be a SB; it could be a limited run or someone swapped the 6" barrel onto a RB frame that originally had a 2.5" barrel.

With the RB frame you can always put SB style stocks onto it, but you probably already know that.

That's all I could find was 2.5 inch barrels and a couple 4's. It's the only one I've ever seen.

I bought a 586 with a round butt, 4 inch barrel, and a flat black finish. I was told it was a special run made in 1993 for a wholesaler/distributor. I can't remember the name of the distributor, but I got a great deal on it. Stamped 586-3 on the inside of the crane.

Mine is stamped in same location and is more of a matte blued finish. Maybe made for same company?

Could be for the same company. Mine came with a Hogue™ Monogrip already installed. It is not the one that converts a round to a square. Awesome gun, wouldn't sell it for anything.

I have several (3) 586s with RB frames. Two are in 38 Special and one of those is a 6". These however are 586-4 models. The third one is a Custom Shop variation which I don't think is indicative of regular production.

I have a 686-3 with a square butt. It was a limited run made for a local gun club that I shot with. We got 20 orders together and they built it this way for us.

I like the round butt because you can get a grip that profiles the shape of a square butt, or something that fits the round butt, or anything in between.

Uncle mikes makes a great grip that is very hand filling but a little more compact than the square butt.

Its the gun in the middle: (the funny looking gun on top is a high polish nickel 29-3 that I use for deer hunting)

It doesn't look refinished. Just not a bright blue, more of a dull blue. dcmdon What grips do you have on the 686 in the pic?

It is the Uncle Mike's grips that he refers to in his post. They are no longer in production but can be found used.

Here are a few pictures of my four inch 586-3 with round butt and Hogue grips.I thought the round butt guns came out in the -4 series. It is a great gun though...

Mine looks like the one above. Scout II, does yours have a matte, almost flat black finish?

I would say yes, more flat than the nice polished blueing of my 586 no dash.I thought that was just because it was newer made and that is how some of them look.

Next gun on my list, a 586 4" with a RB.....Would look nice with some RB finger groove combats on it

I had a 586-4 6" round butt (CAF6892) from '95 for part of this year. Like you, I didn't care for the RB so I did buy a set of Ahrends RB to SB Retro Combat conversion grips. The grips made a big difference for me, but several months later I traded the 586 (with the original rubbers installed) for a nickel 19-3 with 6" barrel. Both shot / shoot extremely well - my shooter's preference has evolved to "K" frames.

If interested in the Ahrends grips shoot me an e-mail. My other RB guns (65-3 & 10-8 both 3") have suitable grips.
