Smith Wesson 617-6 6” square butt ?? Thought all new ones was round butt l?? What does the sb stand for on label?? Took the pick at gun show!!

The 17-6 was introduced in 1990, so I don't know if everyone would agree that it is new.

It is of the RB frame era for the model 617, so the "SB" likely refers to the type of rubber stocks that came on the gun.

I believe Round butt frames with Round to Square conversion stocks are listed as "SB", Square Butt on the box label. You can tell by looking at the backstrap, can you see all of it or does some in the bottom 1/3rd be covered by the grip? Pull the grips off and you will find a round butt frame.
