Looking for some help. I have a S&W .357 Magnum (pre model 27) nickel 8 3/8" BBL with the original box. The box is the correct Gold box and marked "Nickel Finish" with the matching numbers on the bottom of the box so I would say it the original box to the gun. The gun is in near mint condition, easily 98%. What would the insured value be compared to what I could realistically expect to sell the gun and box for? The serial number is: S 162XXX. Any help would be much appreciated.

Beautiful Gun!!!

Factory original 8 3/8" barreled pre-27s are not very common. If it is all original, I would insure the package between $2K and $4K, and the same range is where I would expect it to sell.

That said, I am surprised that your Nickel pre-27 does not appear to have the exposed front sight pins and a blued front sight base and sight, which is how almost all of the factory nickel pre-27s shipped from the factory. If original factory nickel, it should have an "N" stamped under the cylinder star, an "N" stamped in the barrel shroud in front of the serial number, and an "N" stamped on the grip frame under the grips.

Here are some photos of a lettered Nickel 8 3/8" pre-27:

Just took a few more photos to show you the location of the "N" stamps...

If it is a blued gun that was re-nickled at some point in its life, cut the above values in half (i.e. $1K to $2K).
