i would like to find out when my s&w m20 was made. the serial number is S 1560**. any help would be appreciated. thank you.

i should also clarify that the serial number has six digits. the ** represented the last two numbers. the book i read said it was made between 1958-1966. is that not correct?
 
Those last two numbers really don't make a difference, and several guns have a time period listed like that for their manufacture.
 
why is there such a big difference in price between the pre model 20 and a post war.
 
If it is model marked MOD-20 then it is a rarity. They are hard to come by and a lot less common than post war guns. Can you show us some pics. A few of us here would love to see it, including the model marking.
 
Very few were made stamped with the model number. If it's not so stamped it's not a Model 20 but a 38/44 Heavy Duty.
