Anyone have any information on my Mod. 1000 shotgun? I have had some problems, and wonder if it is from using steel shot.

How Old is your shotgun I have heard that the older model 1000 had problems with the gas system
The impact gasket at the bottom of the cylinder turns to goo due to oil and solvent coming in contact with o-ring also keep it clean, clean, clean. Let me know.

Since I asked here, I found out exactly what you said. Apparently there is an o-ring that goes bad. I didn't think the gun had o-rings in the gas system. I quess I haven't taken it apart far enough. I think I am on track to solving my problem. I appreciate your answers.

By the way, I have had this gun since the 70's and it has always been an excellent gun (until now). I love the way it handles and shoots. I shot with a borrowed shotgun this weekend and can't wait to get my S&W back on line.

It really isn't an O-ring, it is the "piston shock absorber".
I replaced the shock absorber on all 8 of my S&W Model 1000s. Two of the shock absorbers had totally turned to goo and made a big mess of the gas system. Others were in various states of decomposition to almost like new.
You can get piston shock absorber from LSG, Mfg|Gun Parts|Warranty|Gunsmithing or Piston Shock Absorber, 12 Ga.
Good luck,

im having the same issue w/ my 20 1000m.
Will i need to remove the magazine tube (it's on super tight) to get to the magazine spring retainer washer out?
the absorb-er is completely turned to goo?

No, do not remove, or try to remove the magazine tube.
Clean all the goo out from the piston end.
