Smith and Wesson Model 586

I just acquired a pristine model 586. and I'm trying to determine its age.
Can anyone help.

Serial number AAE06xx M

This is one of the nicest hand guns you could ever own, and a piece of American History.
The gun blue book called it a " Distinguished Combat Magnum"

Dare I say "stunning"? Well, pretty dog gone nice, anyway...

When was it made? Not sure exactly, but OBVIOUSLY, back when they really knew how to build 'em! ;=]

Can't give you an age, but if it has an "M" stamp it's probably a -1 or a -2 which would put it in the early to mid 80's.

I've had many 586/686 in all barrel lengths and I finally settled on a 4" 586-1 as the best of the bunch IMO.

I sold a 4" 686-2 to get it and I like it better.

Point being, any dash up to a -4 is the good years for this series, but I prefer blue, it just looks & feels better.

The book lists approximate ship dates. It says S/N prefix AAD was 1981 and says AAF 9000 was October 1982.
With your AAE, I'd guess your gun was built sometime in 1982.

You have one of the earlier 586 no-dash (or pre-dash) models. Your S&W logo stamp is on the right side of the gun. The stamp was moved to the left side while the no-dash was still in production.
The M-stamp recall affected the no-dash and the -1 models.
