Smith and Wesson Model 617

I may be alone in this argument that any 617 is a good 617.
The one in question however, is more desirable and I would pay about 700 for it.

Have to agree with you 100%. I have an original 617 no dash 8 3/8ths full target options purchased new in 1990 for $299. She is a fabulous shooter, then again, so is my 2008 era 4 inch ten shot 617-6 I purchased used last year for $549. I wouldn't sell either one now.

There is a real market for the no dash 617 especially if it has the S&W wood combat grips and if it has the box and paperwork it will bring top dollar.

Are there any laws that would prevent Smith and Wesson from making a "new" no-dash 617? Surely they read these forums and must understand that a lot of folks just don't want the "improvements"---from what I've seen there are just not enough of the originals to go around. I bet that there are lots of folks that would pay a premium for something like this. Just seems like they are missing a good business opportunity. They could sell these through their Classics line.

"Holy guacamole batman!!"

Those are some high prices for a gun you can get from Bud's for under $700...NEW. Ok, it has the lock, but other than that it's a comparable gun. In my mind, the 'new' price would create some kind of price ceiling.

Yeah, except the new gun will come with $15 Goodyears, and the no dash 617 will have $125 worth of wood.
However,I still think the 650-700 neighborhood is more in line than the 800 plus mentioned.I like new, perfect stuff,(yeah, noting that many new ones don't come perfect)and unless the old one was pristine,I'd opt for new and put my own grips on it.

A like new 617 no dash with box went in a short time the other day for $750 and I'm sure SEVERAL members upon seeing that sale were unhappy. I know I was. It had TREMENDOUS combat's.

You can wish all You want but the early guns WILL command more than a later gun. Simply the way it is.

Want to see crazy prices for 617's? IF you can find one check out the NO LUG guns. I think they made 116 or so six inchers, and 200 of the 4" guns.

A 6" recently went for $1650 on GB, and it was a used gun, NO box. A member recently mentioned a NIB pristine 6" gun with an asking of $3800.

$800 starts to look like a bargain.

It seems to me that some guys love to either give false expectations of the market or post 90s prices while remaining elusive about exactly when the gun was purchased.

Sure, someone will no doubt be along with a 4" no dash new in the box and will have paid a bud $300 for the gun and a brick of ammo, but that's not the real world - it's an exception. I like a deal as much as the next guy, but I like guns too. And if I wait around trying to match these one in a thousand bargains, I'll be waiting a long time.

I play the odds. I pay fair market value or a little less depending on how bad I want it and if I come upon a steal - great. If not, I'm still shooting. Two weeks ago I snapped up a very early 617 ND 4" with box, papers and combats for $790 shipped. That is a realistic price and I conisder it a great deal. It has the best DA pull of any gun I own - even my wife loves it. I plan to shoot this thing as often as I can.

The other day, I tried throwing $500 at the target and it grouped all over the place. My absurd $800 revolver does a much better job.:p You don't have to like it, but if want the gun, you gotta pay up, Sucka.

OP - not less than $750. A little less for the good ol' boys if you hoc it here.;)
