In 1995 I got my first Smith and Wesson, a Sigma SW9C right around the time they came out. After reading Massad Ayoob's article in American Handgunner and seeing the accompanying photos, my girlfriend at the time, wife now, decided she'd like one. Me being a know-it-all 20something told her it'd be just like a Glock. We fondled a couple at various gunshops and were sold based on the feel of them.

Boy, were we wrong. The trigger felt like a box of gravel, it was all over the place accuracy-wise, and we had all kinds of failures to feed and eject. Of course, since they were new, we paid close to $500 wholesale for the darn thing. In 2000, I wrote S&W about its issues and to their credit they took it back to try to help it and while it got better, it still left much to be desired. That's the only bad one. 0/1 on Smiths.

In 2001ish I got my next S&W, a 68 vintage 4" Model 57 w/ Cokes at Cabela's. This one only cost me $425 OTD at the time. 1/2 on Smiths.

I next found a pre-rail 4013 TSW that I believe was NOS for $500 plus tax at a local dealer's. Very nice pistol but I traded it for a LNIB Italian Beretta 92 Centurion. 2/3 on Smiths.

In early 2008 I bought a Very Good Model 65-2 from CDNN for $299 plus shipping. This taught me to appreciate revolvers as well as how to actually shoot them properly. 3/4 on Smiths.

In mid to late 2008 I bought a 53 vintage pre-18 w/ grips and box numbered to it from a member here for $500 delivered. It's pre-18, is there really anything negative that can be said? 4/5 on Smiths.

Finally, just this spring I got a LE trade-in 4046TSW off of Gunbroker for $339 delivered. It's a TSW for almost nothing, again is there anything negative that can be said about this acquisition? 5/6 on Smiths.

Surprisingly I own more S&Ws than any other brand all of a sudden and I've come by most of them at prices lower than would be expected. If not for that darned Sigma I'd be batting 1.000 in the S&W department.

If not for this site, I'd probably either not even bothered batting or done much worse. Thank you for all the information you all share on a day-to-day basis.

Thanks for reading and any comments are appreciated,
Scott

I know how you feel, I too own more S&Ws than any others. In fact I own more S&Ws than all the others combined. Most of mine are revolvers though.

Sounds like the moral of this story is to not buy brand new S&W's..... I bought some new once- it was 1993.

True, very few of mine were new. And there will never be another new one, but I'm not going to open that can of worms.
