I will shortly be faced with this question. My gunsmith says he can make the trigger on my 645 as nice as his revolver triggers and convert the gun to DAO. I have shot lots of revolvers and the DA pull comes second nature to me. What do you all think?

I was trained to shoot revolvers DA when I became a LEO. I am very comfortable with a DAO auto, especially for serious carry. I have a hard time going from DA to SA mode in an auto. If I could have a 645 converted to DAO by someone I knew for sure could do that properly and it would have a good, smooth trigger and was absolutely reliable, I would probably do it. That is if the gun was to be carried for serious social purposes. If it was to be a toy, then I would leave it as is...

Leave it stock DA/SA.

AZ Shooter,

Does you 'smith say whether he can do this on any S&W auto? If so, could you email me with his info @ [email protected] please?

I'd have it done on my 3913 in a heartbeat.

Well then, Infidel,

Guess who I'll be contacting tomorrow?

SHOOT1SAM,
There is a big difference between the two guns - M645 and M457. The M645 is a second generation gun, while the M457 is a third generation gun, albeit from the Value Series.
I've not heard of anyone converting a Second Gen gun to DAO.
The M457 can be converted, as other Third gen guns, although the slide will not be as long as a traditional DAO gun.
In fact, they actually made a factory DAO version of the M457 for Chicago Police, it was called the M457D, which had the long slide like other DAO models.

With the number of DAO S&Ws out there , I think just trading it for the comparable DAO model would be best (for example 3913 TDA -> 3953 DAO). Especially if you decide to trade or sell it later down the road converting it will affect value )

I have decided to stay DA/SA. I can put the money I save into a trigger job on another 645 or a 5906.

I have both 3913 and a 3953. I do prefer the '53 and its DAO.

I have been considering posting the '13 to trade for another '53, but thought that if I could get it converted for a reasonable price, I'd do that instead.

The 3953 and 4053 are two of my favorite serious carry pistols [and 4566]. I regularly shoot dao revolvers, so a DAO is a natural. I trust the third generation Smiths, over upper end 1911's. There are other fine, reliable pistols, but none better than third gen S&W.

SHOOT1SAM, I'm sorry to hear S&W won't perform the conversion for you. Perhaps if your gun was a 3913TSW it would make a difference, not that it's any help.
