Back to lgs today saw once again a model 15-4 2 inch pinned barrel from estate I've been purchasing from this summer. This one appears never fired has pach round butt grips, adjustable sights blueing 99plus no box papers. Pinned barrel no lock etc bright hammer trigger. Not the later hardened ones. $400 seems fair wondering did this come with wood grips? Probably be home with me next week. Just a beautiful gun and can picture it with wood grips

It would have come with wood grips, the synthetic grips didn't appear until the 15-7 in 1994 according to the SCSW.

For a good condition 15-4 $400.00 would be about average unless it came the proper grips and box. I have a 2 inch Model 15 and it is a wonderful revolver.

Nice find!!

Never say never, but have a look under those stocks and you will 'probably' see a SB grip frame. An unaltered 2" model 15 in the condition described is well worth $400, even with having to find replacement original stocks, but the non-case hardened hammer and trigger strongly suggest a refinish.

BTW, from a current auction (can't mention the site), a later production model 15 (not a 2" or -4, but RB):

Ok so my search for grips should be for sb stocks, I may do that. Didn't know rb would fit a sb frame but guess they will. They feel good I imagine it shoots well too. Even though it's a 70's model gun it would have had a case hardened hammer and trigger?

Yes, blued S & Ws of that era always had case hardened parts. While you are confirming it has a SB frame, if you can note the SN we can let you know when it shipped.

Sn97k1615. Called s&w they told me it's a 1979. No I haven't pulled grips to verify sb just going on what I read here. I just took photos of several guns I've recently acquired. Have them in a slideshow working on trying to get it on here

I have a 15-4, 2" Square Butt and it is an awesome little shooter. I got it off Gunbroker last year for $300. Has a little blue wear, and was missing the locking bolt, pin and spring. A call to S&W had those parts in my hand 3 days later, installed them and now it's my glove box gun. Plenty accurate with 135gr +P Gold dots, and I put the Eagle Secret Service checkered grip panels on it, plus I painted the front sight ramp orange...a dreamy little snub to say the least!

I just took that 15 out and fired it. It is a nice shooter. Since it's really not so much collectible I may just leave those pach grips on it unless I do come across some nice originals. It does look nice with rb soft grips though something about a blued gun with wood grips

I always look for more wood grips! You can't have too many. Have some rubber ducky grips, but not on any gun. Altamont has some nice grips, and reasonable priced grips tend to show up on ebay. Bob

Bob the first pair I saw on eBay just now looked original and I went Altamonts sight they had some nice k frame grips too. Thanks, too bad S&W store doesn't make them as nice as originals

I prefer the older style grips myself. I only have 1 IL gun, and the rest are 80's back. One of my favorite grips are Diamond Targets. Have a very nice set for my 28 no dash. All but 1 of my revolvers have target grips on them. I bought a set of smooth targets for $15, from my FFL.
I have a 67 no dash, which basically your gun in stainless. You will like a 15! Bob

Round butt grips WILL NOT fit a square butt frame.

Good to know there were a few RB M15's made. I'm a fan of both! (I guess now, thanks to you fine gents, I can't say I've never seen one).

Another thing I've never seen is a round butt pre-lock M67. Anyone? Anyone?
