Smith model 57 ....Long Tom

With my ever declining eye sight I have become fond of 8 3/8" barrels.

Depends what you are doing but the long barrels are fun to shoot and crazy accurate plus you are talking .41 mag!
I would buy in a minute if truly 85%+ condition for $685

.41 cal

I'd buy it, too. Heck, I'd buy two at that price.

Sweet, impractical maybe ,but what a gun. Nice score you lucky dog. Head to the range and have some fun.
Bet that would be just the ticket on hogs!

Went back and bought this lizzard.
Seller thru in a box of ammo.
I have heard of "House, bedside, truck, boat
and woods" guns.
This was a local farmers "tractor" gun.

Tractor gun...I love it. Good for you for buying it. You didn't ask for opinions, but here's mine, anyway. I wouldn't cut that barrel. If I wanted a shorter barrel, I'd look for another one.

Cut it to 5"? Why molest a fine revolver like that?
685 is a good deal, in my part of the USA.
Since the OP said he was hesitant because of the 8 3/8" length, you create a practical firearm in it's place

The first 41 mag I shot, was a 8 3/8's. Belonged to a friend of mine. I have one now, along with a 6", and two Lew Horton 657's. Plus a TC Contender barrel in 41 Mag

I have an M657 with that length of barrel.
It's one of my favorites. I have even shot it at a local
steel plate match. Found a holster for it on this board.

The 657 has a fine trigger and does not appear to approve of
missing. It makes me look good.

Good buy, great price!

I am fond of long-barrel N frames in general, but have a soft spot for the 57 in particular. I'd happily buy two at that price! Congrats on that deal!

Bob,
I bet you bought the model 57 first.

I got the 657 as the first long tube. My first one got scoped and the second one was left with the open sights.

I now have two blue 8 3/8" model 57s.

I love stores that do not put stuff for sale on the internet. They are my favorite place to hunt for used S&Ws

In my town, if it is not plastic, it sits on the shelves. We had a large store with hundreds of rifles and pistols. 95%+ of the inventory was plastic pistols or black rifles.

One little 6 foot long case for used stuff sat in the back corner. Last summer, a 8 3/8" 57, P&R, no cylinder line and no box, blue revolver was sitting in there.

They were asking $700.

I already owned one so I made a low ball OTD offer. They said NO and I went home. I check out this store's used case every 3-4 weeks, on my next visit it was still there. So I made the same offer to the owner a second time and he said NO a second time. On my third visit the store owner said YES.

Truth is, I have been thinking about cutting this extra one down to 5" for a nice belt gun. I already own 4" and 6" 57s. This 41 Magnum family photo is about 10 years old and missing half of it's cousins at the moment
