Looking at a clean 4 inch pinned 25-5 . Correct grips . No box. Gun is in about 95% condition and looks like it was fired very little. Owner is asking 1000.00 and says that its a decent price and that the 4 inch guns bring more money. What do You think is a good price on what I described? Thank You.

Well, I gave $725 shipped for a minty 8" pinned "N" series, 1979 mfg., a couple years back. I think the 4"ers are bringing a premium. Big Larry

I bought a 6" from a friend not too long ago
It was nice came with a relined presentation case and all the goodies.

IMO 1k is the absolute high side of good
try to counter with 800 see what he says

I have the same gun a year newer (N76XXXX) in minty condition. I seem to recall paying $700 about 5 years ago. I would agree that $1K is on the high side - not unreasonable, but not a "deal" either.

Make sure the cylinder throats aren't oversize. I have a N714xxx that was made in 1980 and it was oversize.

1K=$300 too high. Probably does have large throats. Take a regular .452" dia bullet and see if it will fall through the throats. If it does then they are too big. Probably .454-.456. If it hangs up then they are right on at .452.
BTW I bought a 6" 25-5 last year with the oversize throats. Bought a .454" dia mold & sizer=problem solved.

You will have to measure the inside diameter of the throats,Mine ranged from .456 to .459 and I ended up installing an new cylinder. I used a caliper to measure mine. I didn't know there was a with the 25-5 when I bought it but before I fixed it keyholes were common and group size was not what I considered acceptable.

The 4" is much less common and brings more money. I got this one from a pawn shop dealer set up at a local show within the past 2 years for $550.

Seems to do OK but I haven't done any serious accuracy testing. I always load lead bullets sized .454" in all my 45 Colt caliber revolvers.

I like the wood with a lot of figure. The ones with even color all over are far less interesting to me.

These are also pretty nice but they were wrong for the gun. May be setting in a drawer at this point waiting for the right gun to come along.

As a general rule, if the barrel is pinned the throats are suspect. S&W finally corrected the oversized throats just about the same time they deleted the barrel pin. However as with all things S&W, there are always exceptions.

And I agree, $1000 is way too much.

I too have a 1956 vintage pre M27 # S 163827. Whats yours? Mine has the 6" bbl. and magna stocks numbered to the gun. Thanks, Big Larry

I have a 4" 25-5 with an S/N of N88232X and it has chamber throats that caliper 0.458":

Accuracy is not good at all using 0.452"-0.453" cast or swaged lead bullets, although it's just fine using jacketed bullets. That said, it's been 16-18 YEARS since I've fired it, and there's less than 100 total rounds through this safe queen.

I bought one 2 or 3 years ago for $500.00. It was very very nice, like new, no box. It had the big throat and key holed at 25 yards. I had it with me and bumped into the original owner at a gun show, he was not a shooter and wanted it back. Geez was I lucky....

I have only seen a few since then, they were in the $750.00 range.

How do model 25-5's with oversized cilynders shoot with FACTORY JHP ammo?

Check Gunbroker, $750-$800 seems to be the going range on there.
