smith & wesson 27623

have a 45 revolver. serial on butt is 27623, has swivel on butt, stag grips. has bnp, 455 760 6 tons perxx can't make out last two letters. bnp has symbol of crown over it. any help would be very much appreciated. this was my fathers gun.

Probably the .455 Hand Ejector, second model. Many of these were made by S&W for the British military (including Canada) in the 1915-1916 period. Pictures would be good. Lots of history surrounding these, and many were later modified to accept .45 Colt and .45 Auto ammunition. One which is unmolested is worth somewhat more, but .455 ammo (the standard British military revolver round at the time) is tough to come by if you wish to shoot it.

Looks somewhat alike but mine has stag grips. Seems like I remember it was a Canadian mounted police pistol. It does have the swivel on butt. Also has crown symbol on cylinders

The grips have been replaced. Too bad, as the original ones are fairly valuable all by themselves. The Mounties also used them, and there were even a small number made up for Mountie use which were factory chambered in .45 Colt. But it seems no one knows what the serial numbers of the Canadian .45s were.

I don't think it had been changed. It is 45 colt
