I have a S & W .38 DA/SA top break revolver, model 4 (per serial number 444XXX). While firing, the trigger guard popped out along with the trigger spring. I cannot get the spring back in to properly return the trigger to the forward position. Can someone guide me and maybe include some pics how the spring should be placed with the trigger guard. Thanks.

The trigger guard is a spring. Make sure that it hasn't lost its spring. Check for size and fit. From 20 YO memory: one side of the trigger spring is slightly longer than the other. With the revolver upside down, place the short side in the relief cut in the frame and the long side on the trigger. Slide the front of the trigger guard into the pocket in the frame just in front of the trigger spring and cam the trigger guard down and snap it in place at the rear. I use a set of plastic locking pliers to squeeze the trigger guard to remove and install. The part of this that I'm not sure of is the 'long' or 'short' leg up or down. Try it one way and if it doesn't work, then flip it over and reinstall it.

Thanks. I did finally get it into place properly a little earlier. I've been fighting with that spring for over a week. I appreciate the advice.
