Ian,
Can you post a different access to the photo? I can’t see it.
Thanks.

I don’t know how to. It’s on eBay, just type in words in the listing title under the recently sold items section.

It is a nice box. I almost won that one, but was out of town when the auction closed. That box is not often found. I have that particular model and barrel length and it would have been my best box (rarest) box to date.
What is the saying, if you snooze, you loose

I’m surprised at the responses! I thought, given the condition, it sold for a little on the high side.

Agree that the box is rough, but they don't come up for sale very often. The last one that I saw for sale was about 10 years ago.

Is it THIS specific box that is rare? I have several revolvers in original boxes from that era and, while not commonplace, not extraordinarily rare, either.

They made a little over 15,000 of the 44 DA Frontier revolvers, and the barrel length of 4" is less common than the 6 1/2".

I didn’t pay particular attention to the 4” part. I was willing to go to $250, but it was already at $271.00 when I found it. To me shipped IF I had been the $271 bidder would have been $300.72. More than I wanted to go and I would have to pay more than that to outbid the $271 bid.

Thinking about the intended purpose of the gun box, it was only meant to get a new revolver to a seller or buyer safely. Most all were thrown away, so boxes from the 1880s have become scarce to rare and, frankly, I think the price was low. Just think about how many 44 DA boxes you have ever seen??

As for condition, it is actually quite high for its 140 year age. Many, if they still exist, are a pile of tattered pieces.

I don’t know, here’s examples in my collection, all containing a firearm.

Checked WalMart lately? They ain't got any.....;)

I get that, but I still thought it to be high at being into it for over $300. And so how high should I have bid on it, accounting for $12.70 shipping and 6% sales tax?

Wow,
That is a nice box! The exterior fade can be restored.

That it can, and the guy that can do it is Gary Lowe ("glowe" hereabouts).

The best part about his work is it's whatever you want it to be. If you want a completely restored, like new box; he can do that. If you'd rather have an old box that's been well cared for, he can do that too.

He's done two for me. One was a warped all to hell NM #3 box (THE box)!! It was warped everyplace it had a place!! I absolutely, positively KNEW there was NOTHING that could be done for it---but I sent it along anyway. It came back DEAD SQUARE (with some weak/damaged corners made strong)------and it stayed that way---and looked like it'd always been that way.

The other one was for a .44 2nd H.E. target---also THE box. It was in pretty decent shape, aside from some weak corners, and a HUGE, horrible stain on top. It came back with strong corners---and NO stain---and you couldn't tell that it'd always been that way.

Can you say WIZARD?!!

Yes, and all those guns are smaller frames.
Boxes for #3 Frames are very scarce, and that box is for a scarce config (4" barrell).
I would not sell that box for less than $500. Probably ask 6-750.
