Smith & Wesson 586-6 Distinguished Combat .357 Magnum Revolver

I'm looking for some information on my S&W 586 Distinguished Combat Magnum color BLACK. It also has the Hogue grip with the rounded base. I find in the gun sites Stainless (686) and blued (586) but can't seem to find the production infor on the black parkerized version. When I purchased it back in the early 90, I was told it was a limited run. But I can't remember how many were made. Here's a picture of it.

Looks like a 686 with the black stainless finish. I think it was an early PVD coating that S&W discontinued due to it scratching easily. Not too sure about that though.

I had one of these also, bought in the same era. Mine had a red ramp front sight and a white outline rear along with the hogue grips. At that time I was told that they were a limited run for the US Secret Service. I paid about $235 for mine at the time. Great shooter, gave it to my son.

Kb1903, Yea, sounds like the same thing I was told, Limited run, question is how many were made, is there any collectors value, should I store it and not shoot it. I'm gonna try and get S&W to give me some info. I'm not selling it, just want some documentation so I can talk about it. Every body loves it, everyone asked me if I want to sell it. It shoots great, I think total rounds thru it to be under 250 rds.

It's not Black Stainless,I don't think, But I think it Black parkerized. Same thing Beretta does to its pistols..

I remember the last time I shot this baby, was at night. I was training a line of rookies shooting our department S&W 69XX semi-autos. Comments were made about my 4" Dist. Combat Magnum, how old school etc. etc. It was around 7pm and dark, I told them to hold the line, pulled out the old wheel gun, BAM, one round of .357 and a fireball the size of a cannon. The rookies had a new respect for what power was all about from the old wheel gun. I had several request if they could fire it... I told them, only a real man can handle the .357, stick with your 9mm... That was the talk of the night... got to just love the .357 magnum..
