Never seen that before. Looks like the barrel threading guy was overly enthusiastic that day. As long as the B/C gap is within spec, everything else looks proper and you can live with the looks, I wouldn't worry about it.

It's just missing the last cut after the threading is complete.
That should take the threaded portion down to or just below the minor dia of the thread cut for a short distance from the breech end forward.
It creates a smooth unthreaded portion that extends from the frame to cylinder.

Maybe a bad run of bbls on the cnc machine. Maybe they tried using it as a shortcut in production at some point.,,time saver.

Instant collectible!

My pinned-barrel M63 (no dash) that I've had for 30+ years shows the same though less pronounced partial threading. So far, it's only been a problem for the occasional raccoon.

Mine too.

The barrel stamping on mine is also uneven, visibly shallow at one end. I find the "legendary" quality of S&W on many of the late 70's and 80's guns to be lacking. Still great shooting and functioning guns for the most part but fit and finish is hit or miss.

Thanks guys! Guess they forgot to turn the threads off. Must have been done on a Monday or Friday. Yours is gorgeous Pharmer!

You have to remember that the factory runs 24/7, with the guys working twelve hour shifts (That's what I recall, from a factory tour long ago)
Some of the procedures must get very mind numbing.

Over the years, I have seen this on more than one occasion.
Back in the 70s, if I recall.
Poor QC.
Best,
Gary

Yeah, I thought about someone changing the barrel. It is at around $360 right now with a couple days left. There is also a 17-4 that is at around $230ish with some rust and pitting...probably best to forget about them and buy a nice one with no worries?

If if there are only cosmetic issues on that Mod 17, and if it stayed under $450, I would be the new owner.
Best,
Gary

Here are a few pics of the 17...

Ejector rod don't show much wear, but the gun has definitely been neglected.
