Hey all,
I did some reading on the forum about the older S&W Mountain guns, and IIRC it said the first .44 Mag Mountain Guns were released in the late 1980's, with another run coming in about 1997 or so.

I also read a run of .41 Magnum Mountain Guns were done about the same time, around 1998, I think.

My questions are these:

• Was the only run of 657 .41 Magnum Mountain Guns done in that 1998 or so run?

• Were there any .41 Mag Mountain Guns made before 1998 with the older style hammer-mounted firing pin?

• Were all 1998 or so 657 .41 Mag Mountain Guns made with the hammer mounted on the frame?

Thanks, guys!

The info I had said 1999 Stocking Dealer Exclusive, so they were likely made in 1998. No box but CCY prefix on my example.

Beautiful wheelgun! A shame about the frame mounted firing pin.
I never could get past Smith doing that, or the frame lock.
Still, love the tapered barrel!

I have a newly acquired 657-4 Mountain Gun with a serial of CEC XXXX. S&W Customer Service gave me a ship date of July 2000. I'd like to know manufacture year, though.

Your Revolver was manufactured in 2000

In the early days when information was written by hand and stored in file cabinets the Factory used the Shipping Date interchangeably as the Date of Manufacture

The Data Age changed that

The actual Date of Manufacture is currently the information stored in the Customer Service data system for firearms built after Smith & Wesson computerized in the mid 1980s

The DOM has actually been on the Computer printed labels (98+% of the time) since the change

Getting the shipping date on post 1980s firearm requires a Historical Letter these days
