Smith & Wesson M&P questions and availability (will be my first gun)

Hello everyone,

I am going to be purchasing my first gun, i live in ohio and have a few questions about availability. I am a real fan of the m&p.40c. i was looking on line and was wondering do local gun shops order the handgun you like or do you have to buy whats out?... i really want the m and p with no mag safety and no thumb safety. how would I ask that? is it a special order or custom order? this will be the firearm i am going to have for my concealed carriers weapon, also is this a very popular model because i have been looking online on Smith and Wesson website and still out of stock since the beginning of January. If any of you have any insight for me it would be greatly appreciated and put into thought..

I personally do not like ordering firearms. Just a preferance, nothing to be afraid of. I told family and friends that do frequent shopping in gun shops what I was looking for. The M&P9c, no mag, thumb, or frame safety. I would check shops every week. All the owners said they were selling like hot-cakes, especially because they can use the 17 or 15 round FS magazines.

Anywho, I was getting home one night when I got a call from my brother. He said they (gun shop/range 20 mins from me) had one M&P 9c and one M&P 40c in stock. Turned around and was on my way. Got there, and there they were. I chose the 9mm model and bought it along with two 17 round mags.

I have never had any luck with reserving or ordering guns. Best is to look for one then and there, on the spot with cash in hand. Also try reaching out to the used firearm market if you dont really mind. Just keep looking and never let your guard down.

And to answer one of your questions- Yes. They are very popular. The 9mm is a little more so, but the 40 is still a great seller. Out of the compacts, that configuration is in demand. Some people dont care, but alot of people want no saftey at all.

The M&P community's pretty much divided on the external and mag safety. My 9c has the mag safety, my FS and Shield don't. It's never been an issue IMHO. If I'm carrying, a mag's in the well and the weapon's in C1. That said, whatever you're more comfortable with.

If you can't find what you want in stock, you or the GS can order it by model #. You may have to wait a while. Its best if you can find one in stock.

They are selling fast, I ended up grabbing whats available because my trip to WV (my own 80 acre "range" was coming up soon.

Just ask them to order one without the safeties for you. They are not special or custom ordered its just that they are very popular and sell faster then the models with the safeties

I've owned a number of M&Ps in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, and none of them had the magazine disconnect (thankfully.) I have had some with the thumb safety, and some without...and except for the Shield, I have never had a M&P with an acceptable thumb safety. They have all felt "mushy" to me, and didn't click on or off with a good, solid feel. (The Shield has a different style safety, and I like it.) I wouldn't recommend a M&P with a thumb safety, other than the Shield. That's too bad, because I do prefer a thumb safety, but only if it has a solid feel to it.

One thing to remember is if you purchase any M&P model in the 40, you can purchase the 9mm barrel for a drop in swap. For the cost of an $80 barrel, you would have a 2 in 1 gun. It is just a simple swap of the barrels, and it works great. In most cases, those that have made the swap have also found the 40 magazine feeds the 9mm cartridges fine. That works fine for practice, but should you decide to carry as a 9mm, I would suggest getting the 9mm mags.

As Rob said you can install a barrel in it to make it a 9mm. And like he said, it's best to use a 9mm magazine for that caliber. You can also drop in a .357 barrel and use the .40 mags and have 3 guns in one! That's the reason I purchased my .40FS Good Shooting and Keep your Powder Dry!

Put on a comfortable pair of shoes,grab the cash,fill up your gas tank and start hitting every LGS with-in 50-75 miles of you. Forget the ordering and start looking and get a hands on. Chances are better you'll find one faster on foot than waiting. Money talks and they are out there.

I was able to find the M&P9C instock at atlantictactical.com yesterday. Called looking for the impossible to find Glock 26 or S&W M&P9C Leo's and magically they had the S&W available. Ordered immediately, emailed them a copy of my Leo ID and my preferred FFL dealer paperwork. My new baby shipped today.

$398 for the Leo package, add $50 if you don't qualify for it. Highly recommend calling to make sure they have it instock. This was my first dealing with them and I definitely recommend based off of how professional and helpful they were with me.

I am very anxious to find an M&p 45 full size but have only seen one which was drastically overpriced. I am under the impression that this should sell for $550 dollars from a standard availablity point of view. That being said what is the availabilty nd does anyone have any information about when product will once again be available. Making matters worse I live in the compromised state of Masachusettes making things always a bit more difficult. I had been informed that Smith and Wesson had reallocated manufacturing capacity within their production line to focus on the M&p line as a whole and were working around the clock to get product out but what does that Mean? Anyone with any insight?

Where is the M&P 357 sig?

On the subject of availability, where is the M&P 357 sig? They are still on web site but appear to be left out of some Buyer guides. At a recent gun show I wass told that S&W was "re-working" the m&p 357 sig with plans to reintroduce them with improvements to increase popularity and interest. I too am looking to buy my first new gun, at least my first since buying a S&W model 13 357 magnum. I wouild like that purchase to be a m&p compact 357 sig. Everything I have read about the 357 sig has convinced me this is what I want. Have been looking at the Glock 32 and 33, but would much prefer an M&P. Can anyone help with information on where is the m&p 357 sig? Is it going to be re-issued? When? What changes? Or just gossip? Thanks

I have seen the M&P 40c at two different gun stores and several at recent gun show in Charlotte, NC. They are out there with prices from $550 down to $499 new. Also saw several (at least4) M&P 45 full size at gun show, all for around $550. They are both available here. Not so for the M&P 357c sig. Gun show was overwhelmed with people, apparently due to recent events. Seems to be making most high quality guns hard to find, though I think something else is adding to making the M&P 357 sig impossible to find. Asking about a Glock, the gun store was saying it could take 6 months to get one. Apparently a bad time to be gun shopping.
