I've been reading up online about the Smith Wesson Model 19 Carry Comp. Looks like a interesting revolver for CCW yet large enough to still enjoy at the range. Anyone have one ? And might be a silly question, but I haven't seen this mentioned in any reviews, but those the comp increase the sound of the gunfire ?

While I do not own a Model 19 Carry Comp, I do own it's stainless brother the Model 66 F-Comp

As to sound,
No it does not increase the total sound at all, but it does change the direction some of the sound travels and if you are shooting indoors or from a covered position more of the total sound will reach your ears.

I have been a big fan of the carry comp concept and have had a Model 586 L-comp since they came out in 2000.

Owning the L-comp is the reason I have not grabbed one of the new Model 19 Carry Comps yet.

You are going to get folks that will tel you the comp will blind you if you fire at night, if this were true, the flash from the barrel/cylinder gap would blind every revolver shooter at night. Additionally, you will be carrying Premium defense ammunition when you carry, not white/yellow/green box or other economy ammunition tat gets used for practice. Most all premium ammunition uses low flash powder or adds flash suppressant to the loading

Then you will hear horror stories of shooting a comped gun from retention throwing debris into your face. Again, anything that can come out the port of the revolver already comes out of the barrel/cylinder gap. Get just a few inches away and that blast is hardly more than an annoyance

Before you rely on any of these horror stories for your decision making, you need to fire the revolver for yourself and make your own conclusions

Hi Phillies,

I have a model 19 Carry Comp I bought new earlier this year and am very happy with it. Fantastic gun, great balance, and the comp works well at reducing muzzle flip.

I was split between the L-Comp and the Carry Comp but ended up going with the CC because of the interesting enhancements S&W made to their new K frames and since I never owned a K frame before.

Here are some photos of my Carry Comp wearing Culina Combats in Maple Burl.

I have a Model 67 PC Carry Comp. It looks exactly like the 19 Carry Comp, but it's .38 Spl +P.

I've shot mine in IDPA style revolver matches with a random mixture of regular .38's and +P's. I couldn't tell the difference in recoil; friends could hear the difference between the two. It was an outdoor range and they said the +P's were only slightly louder. I think the Power Port on this 67 CC really helps only when you've got the higher pressure gasses jetting out the port to help keep the muzzle rise down. Shooting .357's out of a 19/66/586 Carry Comp would probably make a noticeable difference in recoil vs. a non-comped gun.

I agree completely with what colt_saa said about muzzle flash. I also shoot low light/no light matches, and I've never been bothered by muzzle flash.

That is a great color match from the grip to the matte black. The color combo is amazing like that. Culina makes great grips.
