Smith & Wesson model 422 Year of Manufacture

There are people here that have a lot more resources than I do and I have what should be a simple question:

I have a Smith & Wesson model 422 that has a S/N of TBH140X and I wanted to know when the manufacture date was.

Was told that it was a first edition from a trusted source...so I kept the original box, unused ammo, targets, cleaning kit and everything else that originally came with it is still in the box (as well as a pristine 422!) If there are any questions that you have or any additional information you need, please post here and I will get the information ASAP.

I did and finally got through more than just a voicemail and they gave me the answer that I was looking for...first year of manufacture for the Model 422. Thanks for the time!

Ahhhh....pictures are good. I am very proud of this gun and I am very glad that I kept all the original items that came with it...forgot to show the pictures of the target, but this should give you an idea of the gun.

Don't have my book with me but I believe the "spec ord" number on the box label (7295) means it shipped on the 295th day of 1987.

I bought my first 422 as soon as they were available, but it was just the gun in the blue box, 2 clips. The edition you have came out shortly after I bought mine. I would have waited a couple more months if I had known.

And to Gun4Fun...they are great guns, huh?? I was also wondering what the "promo" on the features label meant.

<<There are tables in Supica and Nahas' excellent Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, but there is some overlap between years, and differences between when the frame was made, and when it shipped. If you have the box, look for the 'Spec Ord' number on the end, which will give you the Ordinal Calendar date that it shipped out. In my case, it's 0055, the 55th day of 1990. The first digit is the last digit of the year, and the other three are the day of that year.....>>

The promo label is referring to the fact that your gun was part of the shipment of guns with the special box, tools,oil, ammo, etc. That was a promotion that S&W ran not too long after they introduced the 422's to try to get family's, especially kids, involved in the shooting sports. I still have ads from back then in quite a few magazines, and an article or four on the intro of both the standard item and the "promo" guns.

Your right, they are great guns. I sold my first one several years ago, and have regretted it ever since. A few years back I went looking for another, and found one with the original box, in mint condition. It was a very early one too, with the S&W emblems instead of the stamped logo on the stocks. I believe that it shipped in '87, but don't recall right off the top of my head what S&W told me when I called to find out.

I was at a local tool/gun shop with my neighbor about 8 or 10 months ago, and saw another just like mine, and talked him into it. He has been a happy camper ever since.

I picked up a 2206 with 4.5" barrel last year, for my son to learn on when he get's old enough. I love the weight of the gun. Think the recoil spring needs to be replaced as the slide was found to not come completely forward on the last range session, just a hair from completely closed which will not allow you to pull trigger. With just the slightest tap it finishes going forward. Plus was starting to experience jams. Love shooting it when it funtions, no recoil and just fun to shoot. My biggest complaint and concern is the lack of decocker, and the apparent history that they are prone to breaking firing pins, and where they are not in production by the factory, scared of gun being reduced to paper-weight, with the accident breakage from a dry-fire.

You mentioned that the slide was almost coming into battery, and that the gun was staring to jam. Both are sure signs that a thorough cleaning is in order. My neighbor I mentioned above thought he was getting his clean, and kept getting jams. I showed him where he was leaving fouling when he cleaned and also how to clean inside the gun better. No more jams!
The 2206 is a very nice gun btw. I'd really like to add one with the 6" bbl to my collection one of these days.
