Smith Wesson Model 59 Nickel

S&W 59

I have had a nickel-finish model 59, also, since 1979. The take down lever has always been difficult. You can download the manual online and it will give you some pictures. First, and for safety sake, I make sure it is unloaded. Now that we got that out of the way, pull and hold the slide back to where the detent on the left side of the slide is over the lever. Then, I press the protruding part of the right side of the take down lever against a small piece of wood. I grab the left side of the lever as it gets pushed up. When the lever is out completely I move the slide forward and make sure the spring does not rocket off into space.

Hope this helps.

Nice looking 59 you got there. I've always liked the feel and weight of this model and I shoot mine very well, but yes the takedown pin has always been hard as **** to dislodge. I almost always have to use a small flathead screwdriver to pop it or lift it up (after aligning the indent over the pin.) Just be careful because in my case I had bought it in 95% condition and ended up scratching it the first time I tried taking the pin out.

I too have a 59 and it is a bear to push that pin out. On my other Smiths, I have recently discovered that if I pull the Lever UP and back at the same time, it works better than just back. Any one else find this to be the case?
