Good afternoon, needing some information on a Smith & Wesson model 63 stainless steel serial number is M117781. I have a vintage Smith & Wesson box that states it’s stainless steel and 4 inch on the box label on the lid, but the revolver will not fit in that box so what am I asking? Do I have the wrong box? Please advise. even if I take the grips off the grips off the revolver, it still won’t fit in the box.

If the serial number on the gun matches that on the box you likely have the correct box. It won't fit because you don't have the original grips. Those targets are nice, and great for J frames, but your gun shipped with the stocks as shown by Mostly Good above. . . .but without the Tyler T grip.

They always fit the boxes poorly, AFAIC. Way too tight, for my tastes. Of course there’s no way to put one in the box if it’s wearing the factory target stocks.

The box you have may not serial number match with your gun, but it looks like the correct box, anyway.

Despite the serial number not matching, that has nothing to do with it because it's still a period correct box. The target stocks are keeping it from fitting. I had the same problem with a model 67-1. Even though it's a larger K frame, it is wearing factory target stocks and won't fit in the box with the target stocks installed. It will fit only if you remove the grips. If you ordered target stocks, they would put them loose in the box.
