Great gun. I like having a hammer so my first shot is single action. I reach in the pocket, put my thumb on the hammer and out she comes. The stock triggers make it difficult to hit ANYTHING in double action but the Apex j frame kit corrects that problem. Put a CT laser on and it's one heck of a concealed carry weapon.

I was looking for a 637, couldn't find one, settled for a 642..I am still looking for a 637 , priced right...I too like the idea of first shot SA..

its my wifes concealed carry.....i removed the lock, plugged the opening, action job and laser sights..makes for a great carry gun...action is slick and she shoots it well

Since my very first Smith & Wesson was a Chiefs Special in 1970, I've always been very fond of those J-frames.

The same Model 637 w/Magna grips from the S&W Store.

While my revolver is vastly more comfortable to shoot with the rubber stocks, I prefer the Magnas for concealed carry. Years of shooting with Magnas has allowed me to be quite accurate with this handgun.

Nothing wrong with the shrouded hammer 442/642. If desired, you can always put in an Apex kit like I did which made a huge difference in the pull. I also polished up some spots on the frame, sear and trigger which makes it a lot smoother. I'm currently waiting for some CT 405 grips to show up and it's gtg. :)

After owning a 638, I've realized that the fuzzies build up something fierce around the hammer when carried in a pocket which is why I went with a 642 this time around.

I have a 637-2 and just watched the Apex videos, looks really easy to install that kit! What/how did you polish the parts? I'd like to do the same when I have mine apart.

Use a hard arkansas stone. Midway has them for about $14 (p/n 537218). I just smooth the rebound slide & adjacent frame surfaces-- it's pretty easy to goof up the hammer & sear engaging surfaces unless you really know what you're doing. Youtube has some how-to videos.

I am buying one of these tomorrow if everything works out with my deal. I look forward to it.
I read an online review and the writer said that the -1 in the model number (637-1) meant it could handle +p ammo??? I thought it was just the -1 first remake of the model 637? Anybody?

Carry a 637 all day, every day, in a Bell Charter Oak Summer Heat, IWB.

Ever look into the 638/438. I think it's the best of both worlds! Shrouded hammer yet still accessible! Kinda ugly but thats what makes them kinda neat! I've got a 438 with an apex kit. Great little pocket revolver!

Have one, over 3000 rounds through it. Eagle grips and a sweet trigger job. Love it !!

So my deal went through for my new to me 637-1. :D

So how old must this thing be to NOT have the lock? No lock is good or bad? I thought all 637's had a lock but I guess not huh!

Looks nice! S&w started putting those locks in around 2001 so it's gotta be made before that. If you provide the first 3 of the serial# we could tell you the year it was made. A lot of people don't like the lock because they feel it ads a bit of complication to such a simply device. There has been stories of the lock engaging while firing but I'm not sure those cases have been proven! I prefer the no lock just because there is no hole in the side!! So long story short, no lock is much more desirable than lock!..ya did good!! Congrats!
