No. You can send the gun directly to S&W for any repair work without having an FFL. The ATF makes an exception when one sends the firearm back to the Factory or repair facility.

Call S&W and get their instructions and maybe if you are lucky they'll send you one of their prepaid call tags.

You can't send a handgun through the Post Office. Handguns will have to go Overnight by FedEx or UPS. It's expensive unless S&W sends you a label.

I've had a 686 and a M10 (RB) re-finished by them, the M10 in the (what I call) the dull beadblasted finish and the same in the stainless version for the 686, oustanding work both times... a little long on the wait but well worth it... TW

USPS DMM 601, Section 12 covers much of the same ground as Publication 52.

To clarify my statement, I wanted only to point out that your blanket "You can't send a handgun through the Post Office." was incorrect. There are plenty of exceptions, such as manufacturers, C&R and regular FFL holders, etc.

I use FFL-to-FFL for regular buy and sell transfers, but in the past, when sending a handgun to S&W for a recall or warranty situation, I use S&W's paperwork, such as Chief38's post.
