With my SC driver's license expiring, I selected the Real ID option, which an online interactive program said required me to bring several additional personal proofs of ID.
At the DMV, only $25, a vision test, and a fresh photo were needed.
Don't know why there was a discrepancy with the additional online requirements, except it seems that the state already had the info, between my Driver's, Concealed Carry, and Voting data.

I'm going to do that here in Va.. I have about 8 months remaining on my license so I assume it's best just to renew at the same time.
Was hoping to avoid air travel but a friend passed in Alaska and that's about the only way to get there.
One big plus now is that wearing a mask is history finally!

Texas had a long list of similar requirements, birth certificate, recent utility bill(?), etc. I was prepared to go stand in a long line in the license bureau, but decided the heck with it, and renewed as usual on line. When my license arrived, it had the shiny gold star of the Real ID without me having to do anything extra. Piece of cake!

I got mine on DL renewal last year. TX requires some proof of citizenship - passport, birth certificate, naturalization papers, etc. I flashed my passport, no problem. Worst part was waiting almost 2 hours in a nasty waiting room containing a bunch of unsavory people before my number came up. Due to my age, I cannot renew over the internet, so I had to go to the main DL office in person.

PA decided that I was "OK" to get one when my license was due to expire. The chap looked at my passport, noted the visas for China (PRC and Taiwan) and some assorted others for "strange places" and simply handed it back without a word. Picked up my new license with the star but then had to pay extra (the first time!) when the clerk saw that I had an M/C license as well. Dave_n

After researching I see the real ID isn't required until next year now to fly so I may wait until my regular DL renewal date.

I got my Real ID drivers license on my last renewal. The Mass. RMV website has a template that you can check off the needed documents and print it out bring that with you. I was in and out in 15 minutes.

Oregon was pretty simple last December. Took my passport, my non-real ID, but still valid Oregon DL, and my Oregon CHL.

(Needed the county-issued CHL to confirm my address as I moved in 2021. Oregon was not updating addresses on DLs at the time, so my old DL had the old address.)

I just renewed my license a few weeks ago; no one said anything about Real ID. What is it?

Andy

I see some of you mentioned passports & air travel, so I gather it has something to do with that.

Go here to get it from the horse's mouth.

REAL ID | Homeland Security

When I got mine, I showed up with a large brown envelop stuffed with bills, professional licensees, etc. Opened it up, slide out the contents, and stood back. Clerk shuffled through them, picked up my passport card, and asked what was this.
Had to take it to two supervisors before someone recognized what is was, and that it was a valid ID.
After that was cleared up, took the requisite ugly *** picture and was on my way.

Maybe you got it without knowing.
If there is a gold star on the front, you have it.

No gold star, I'm afraid. I guess I've missed out on something. Oh well, as long as I'm allowed to drive, that's my only concern.

Andy

A few other things besides driving, so they say.

Beginning May 3, 2023, your South Carolina driver's license or identification card must have a gold star to show it's a REAL ID in order to use it as your identification to board a domestic, commercial flight, enter a secure federal building, or visit a military installation*.

My wife went on Tuesday for hers and was in and out of the Illinois Secretary of State office in 15 minutes. Illinois government as a whole, stinks, but I haven't had any issues when I need to care of something at the Secretary of State.

Same here.

Thanks for filling me in, bigwheelzip. Fortunately those 3 activities are things I never do, nor intend to do.

Thanks again for the information,
Andy
