Years ago I knew of a few guys who would take the side plate off their revolver and fill it with either light rubbing compound, clean it after a 100 trigger pulls and then fill it with polishing compound, repeat 100 trigger pulls clean and lube. I've never tried it but was wondering if anyone has?

As above this old gag has ruined many a fine pistol.
It's been done with valve grinding compound and toothpaste among other materials.
It destroys guns because the only areas that should be smoothed are few, and dumping gunk in the action attach's ALL areas, including places that absolutely should not be touched.

Doing this causes decades of heavy use wear to parts.
The correct way to smooth an action is to buy a Kuhnhausen Shop Manual on the S&W revolvers and read how it's done properly with fine stones to key areas and no where else.
