I have a model 663 and the serial number starts with CCW, does this designation have a description or are they random prefixes?

I believe CCW is the year designation for 1998. What's a 663?

Maybe you have a 66-3?
When Smith started the alphabetic prefix serial numbers, they started with AAA I think.
Then they just progressed down the alphabet and Bam!
You got a CCW.
The 66-3 is a great gun, yes you are a lucky dog and you owe us a picture!

Not truly random, but appearing in a normal alphabetical sequence. CCW was nothing special, and wasn't an acronym for something. It is an interesting coincidence.

There is no dash in my 663 model number, but with it is a stainless K frame .357 magnum with a 4" barrel. Very good condition and is a recent hand me down. So yes a picture is due as soon as I can figure that out.

.... my 663 model number...
Morris, we're trying to tell you it NOT a Model 663. S&W has never made a Model 663. Believe me, if they had, we'd know about it. Even if it was some rare prototype that was never supposedly sold to the public. We would know about that, too.

It's a Model 66-3, without the dash. A mistake was made. The fact that there is no dash is an interesting bit of trivia, but it's just happenstance. It's not even that uncommon. We see mismarked and guns with missing dashes all the time.

It comes up once a week, or once every other week, on this forum.

Mine don't look exactly like the one Muley Gil referenced,
But I wish it did!

I don't notice a lot a M66's with the adjustable trigger stop. That must of been a feature they included with the early guns. Are they there and I'm just missing them? I see them all the time on L-frames from the '80's. Not so much on K's.

great examples, being a new member my access to add photos is denied or Id show mine. I'm glad to have joined you all seem really knowledgeable and helpful. Once I can I will post photos

It shows it age, but hey.

As I suspected, you have the rare "Upside Down 66" with custom Pencil Trigger Stop.

Very nice wheelgun. Every gun owner should have at least 1 S&W 357 Magnum revolver.
