Snub M&P

Picked this up at the LGS yesterday that they took in on trade. I was in there the day they took it in last week but they hadn't priced it yet. Sent me the price Monday. Ended up letting me have it for $400 OTD which I was happy with.

The story is that the gun belonged to this guys grandfather that was a police officer or detective in California and was his backup gun. Looks to have been carried a lot but lockup and timing are good and functions smoothly. I haven't had a chance to take the side plate off and clean/lube the internals but can't wait to get to the range.

The LGS did the transfer for the guy a couple of years ago when the guy received this and a couple other Smiths from his grandfathers estate. Serial is C74416 which puts in somewhere in the '48-'52 range. Came with the Pachmayrs so I need to find some period correct grips.

I bought a 2" 10-5 in nickel (I have posted in other threads) a few years ago from a coworker that my wife quickly claimed and have been looking for a blued one since. I know this isn't a Model 10, but I think it's better.

I have C58650 Shipped 5/17/49. Mine was sold in NYC and shows a lot of carry on old refinish. Used a lot. Jewelry dealer? Off duty piece for a cop? Came with original stocks but they were just beat to hell so a nicer set was located.

Actually, unless there is big-time asymmetrical wear on the other side, the gun shows very little carry wear for a police-carried gun of that vintage, likely 1949. $400 would be a good price for that condition.

But yes, the Pachmayrs feel great for shooting, but look horribly un-classy on a classic snubby

Yours could have shipped in either 1949 or 1950 according to my SN list. Many collectors would call yours a "Pre-Model 10" snubby

Great find, and those older Pachmayr grips seem to fit much more nicely than new production Pachmayrs. (I just wish they had medallions!)

The LGS is going to give me the first rite of refusal if the guy brings in the others. Hopefully he will wait a while, tapped out on gun funds at the moment.

I did notice that the pachs felt better than some of the other/newer pachs I have.

If you look at the corner just above the grips, there is some finish missing, almost looks like something was spilled on it. The backstrap is pretty worn as is the trigger guard. I"ll try to get some better pics with more detail.

The guy at the LGS did the transfer a couple of years ago and remember some grips in the package but doesn't know if they are for this or one of the others.

My immediate Post War Snubbys have the earlier Hammer style.

Grips or no that’s a great price on a very nice Pre-10 Snub, and Round Butt to sweeten the deal, nice find!

For reference, C102944 is my birth year and shipped in 1950, she’s a beauty with correct but non-matching grips...so a nice pair of Grashorn’s fill in just fine.

When did the Hammer shape change?

My immediate Post War Snubbys have the earlier Hammer style.

After the High Speed Hammer (short action) was adopted at around SN S992xxx (around March-April 1948), the hammer spur shape was changed to the "fish hook" style. I believe they were in use until the mid-1950s, maybe even a little later on M&Ps. Don't know why they are called Fish Hook, they don't remind me of one.

Toyman-Looks good. Are those the original grips or should I be looking for ones like on Art Doc's?

I can't tell about original, but that style would be correct for the time for a M&P RB snubby.

I can not advise which grip would be the correct one for your gun. The only way to know is to letter the gun and see what the shipping invoice states.

I keep a 10-7 square butt snub, my former service revolver, as a house gun.
