I have a SD 40 and I wanted to start reloading ammo for it. Everywhere i look im seeing ammo for .40 and 10mm? Can someone please explain? Also, what is the diameter of a .40S&W
so confused

Both are .40 caliber. For a lack of a better description the 10mm is a .40 Magnum.
Velocities can begin where the 40 leaves off.
You can load a 10mm down to .40S&W velocities but you can't load a .40S&W up to 10mm velocities.

Bullets are interchangeable, same dia. I use the same 180g bullets for both. 10mm is just a longer case that holds more powder.
Here's a poser for ya. While 10 mm is one of my absolute favorite rounds to load, shoot and carry, I do not enjoy the recoil of the lesser .40. The 10 doesn't bother me at all. There seems to be a more abrupt "slap" in the .40's recoil.

The bullet diameter of both is .400. The 10mm is longer and more powerful than the .40 S&W. The .400dia bullets can be used in either cartridge. The cartridges themselves , or the reloading data , are not interchangable.

The original 10mm Auto as introduced in the Bren Ten and ammo by Norma was indeed a hot-rod. A 170gr JHP at 1340fps from a 5in barrel.
But thanks to the FBI and problems with the S&W 1006 and Colt Delta Elite , 10mm factory ammo now is barely more than the 40 S&W.
10mm, 180gr - 1030fps. .40 S&W, 180gr - 990fps
There was a .40 Magnum , the .401 Herters Powermag.
200gr JSP- 1300fps
