So my 19 year old son was ready to buy his first gun. I have quite a few myself but he really took to my Shield 9 over the past year and a half. So he started searching on Armslist and found what I think was a pretty good deal. He got a like new Shield with a 100 rounds through it. He also got the 2 mags it came with, plus another 8 rnd mag with a Pearse Pinky extender. He also got a blackhawk and Alien Gear Holster with it plus 200 rounds of Federal range ammo for $375. If you add up the holsters, Mag, ammo and Pinky extenders he got the Shield for roughly what, $220? I think he did pretty good for himself. Needless to say he is super excited for his first gun purchase. He will be 20 in May and is going to take the CPL class around this time next year to hand in his paper work as soon as he turns 21 next year so that gives him plenty of time to learn all the gun laws and train with his new weapon and get good with it. And I also gave him a copy of Maas' book to read.

So what do you guys think? Did he get a pretty good deal?

Hell of a deal! I've spent considerably more on all of those item specifically. Don't tell the wife...

Great deal. My older son just got a new Shield 9mm no thumb safety from Quantico Tactical for $309 shipped with his military discount. I'd say your son did just fine.

In MI you only have to be 21 to buy from a FFl. At 18 you can get a PP from any LEO agency and purchase a handgun from a private party.

S&W.. if your talking about Quantico in Clarksville, Tn, I was just there a couple weekends visiting my Wifes sister and brother in law. He is still in the Army stationed right there at Campbell and we went to QT and a guy was looking at the Shield and it was on sale for $299. My jaw dropped! I was actually kinda pissed because I paid on the high end when they first came out and paid $429 for mine :( I know that is a Military and Police promotion S&W was offering during Christmas. If I was just still active Military lol. I almost had my Brother in Law buy it and I was gonna buy it from him. I told him he was a fool if he didn't buy it on the spot. He didn't!!

Here in Missouri someone under the age of 21, but over 18 can buy a handgun from a private party. Like Mi_Shooter said, it is when someone buys from a FFL that they have to be 21 years old or older.

So, Im just curious. Why are you allowed to buy under 21 from a a Private Owner but not an FFL? Whats the difference?

Fl is the same way. Feds don't have the authority to regulate a private party sell within a state because it's not interstate commerce. So it falls to state law. FYI if you didn't know. The interstate commerce clause in the Constitution is how the feds impose gun regulations.

You expect our representatives or the bureaucrats in Washington to pass any law or regulation that would make common sense?

I didn't know that, & I live in FL. But what I do know is I work at a LGS, so everything is a 4473, & 21 or more years old on a handgun, & 18 or more on a long gun. GARY

Does your county have waiting periods on long guns? Not all fl counties have waiting periods for long guns.

Sadly so. Dade, Broward, & Palm Beach County have a 5 day wait on handguns, & a 3 day wait on long guns. Anything north has a 3 day wait on handguns, & no wait on long guns. Of course, this affects LGS purchases, while private sales have no restrictions. Locally, many who get their CWFL have no desire to carry, they just want to purchase a gun & take it with them.
Several years ago, a 19 yr old came in with his dad to buy a handgun for his security guard job. He had his "G" license which allows him to carry on the job. But I told him he was too young to buy the gun. The dad was incensed that while his son had a "G" license, he was unable to make the purchase. So the dad had to make the purchase, & gift the gun to his son. This is perfectly legal, & had the blessings of the store manager. GARY

A little research reveals that age 18 with pistol permit can buy from individual and age 21 for dealer purchase in your state. Hopefully you aren't dropping a dime on your son for an illegal purchase and a quick search here will indicate the Shield price was good if you are asking for forum approval.

I once seen a guy working the gun counter at a walmart in Pinellas not let a cop leave with a shotgun same day because he didn't have a CWFL. Lol. Cop wasn't very happy and got his money back and left. I know Polk and Manatee don't have waiting periods for long guns. Hillsborough l ( where I live ) has some stupid rule about any sale( private included) that happens on land the public has the right access requires a background check. It's so poorly written the Sheriff's office said they won't enforce it because there's no definition of what " land the public has the right to access" is. Doesn't apply if you have a CWFL though.
