I've got a chance to look at a 342TI.
(Don't know if it has the IL or not.)

I've read that these weigh 11oz., 11.5oz., or 12.5oz.
I'd be trading a 340PD for it, if it's actually 1.5oz. lighter, and no IL.
But, I probably won't go to the trouble if it weighs the same as the 340.
I use front pocket carry, so weight is paramount to me.

Anybody know the real scoop?

I'd make the trade in a heartbeat if the guns are in similar condition and the 342Ti is a pre-lock (duh). S&W offered different grips on the 342 and that's likely why you're seeing different weights listed. The Hogue Bantam grips are the lightest offered (I think), but the Uncle Mikes rubber grips on the 342Ti work well. Easy enough to change the grips and the 342 (pre-IL) is a much more desirable gun than a 340 with the lock.

Thanks for the reply.

I figured the different grips would account for the weight difference.
My 340PD wears the Hogue Bantams, like your top photo.
I think that's the lightest option.

My no internal lock 342TI weighs in at 10.8 ounces on my postal scale. It is fitted with the Hogue Bantams. I will verify this tonight.
grab any pre lock 342TI you see. They are the best.

Thanks SB.

I would be interested to know what the 342 with Bantams weighs.

If I remember correctly, the red/gray laminate grip actually weighed the least of any of the options on the 342 Ti. That is what is on my gun, but I also have a set of bantams, some Pachmyars, and a bunch of "pretty" j-frame grips as well. To tell the truth, I have tried many different grips on j's and the little red/gray ones are my favorite for carry. Wish I could find another set for a spare. Great gun.

I just weighed my 342PD with the Bantams. It is 10.8 ounces and with five Speer 135 grains, it weighs 13.2 ounces.

My 342PD with lock and Spegel grips weighs 11.4 ounces empty.

Going off of memory here, but I was just looking at this in SCSW 3rd ed. a couple of days ago. The difference is in the grips. If I remember correctly, SCSW gave the weight of 11.4 oz. for the Dymondwood grips (the laminate mentioned above), or 12 oz. for the synthetic version grips (Uncle Mike's?) for the 342Ti. The 342PD does weigh less than the 342Ti, at something like 10.8 oz in its lightest grip configuration (as per SCSW), for reasons other than the grips. It actually has less metal--do a search on this site for more info. I do not know SCSW's source for weight data, and I hope I am remembering the numbers precisely. (I do not have the book with me.)

Scout is correct--according to a 2001-vintage S&W product catalog, the official weight of the 342Ti with Uncle Mike's boot grips is 12.0 ounces, while the official weight of the 342PD (like Swenson Bobcat's gun pictured earlier) is 10.8 ounces. The PD weighs less in part because it came with much lighter Hogue Bantam grips, and in part because the gun itself was built to save even more weight over the already super-light Ti version.

Compare the wide flutes on this 342PD...

...to the narrower flutes on a 342Ti:

The wider flutes made the PD's cylinder just a bit lighter, and that, combined with the switch to Bantam grips, helped make the 342PD the lightest Centennial model ever sold.

I weighed my 342Ti after replacing the standard grips with Crimson Trace LG-405 lasergrips (which, like the Bantams, are much lighter than Uncle Mike's boots). The Ti with lasergrips weighed 11.3 ounces empty, and 13.5 ounces fully loaded with Speer 135gr +P ammo.

Wow!

Lots of good info here guys.

The dealer put the Ti on his scale last night, and it was 11.8 with the UM grips.
My 340PD was 11.8 with the Bantams.
I'm thinking I could get down to at least 10.8 if I put Bantams on the Ti.

It's in like new condition, with box, cardboard sleeve, all papers, and no lock!
(Well it has a lock, but it's in the box like DC7s picture, where it should be.)
The original owner couldn't remember if he'd ever shot it.

I would jump all over that deal. 342TI's without the lock are normally in the $650. to $700. range.

Thanks, I did.

He got it in on Saturday, and I happened to check his webpage on Tuesday.
Did a few searches here, and drove up to look at it last night.

I traded my 340PD, and I'm missing it already.

It had a couple of worn spots in the blueing, but was tight as a drum.
I had only fired about 200 rounds through it, probably less than 500 rounds total on the gun.
Had a really nice trigger, deactivated IL, and a Trijicon front sight.

I had to come up with a little cash, but since I got a really good deal on the 340PD, I think I did OK.

Now I've got to shoot it and get some pictures up.

Sounds Like you did pretty darn good to me..
My Personal 342Ti has become my #1 Carry Piece & would be the last to leave..
Oh & if the seller couldn't remember if he had shot it he probobly didn't..
Have a look at the end of the cylinder, Mine had been shot three shots @ The Factory..
Here's Mine as I found it for sale for $550 a few months back..
$900 WOW!!

Mine's dad gum light, whatever it is. I never saw the point of the 340, when most owners load'em with 38+P anyhoo.

Well, I did get the 342Ti, and decided to go ahead and pick up a postal scale.
So I guess I answered my own question.

The 342Ti weighed 11.8 ounces when I got it.
I replaced the Uncle Mike's Boot grips with Hogue Bantams.
That brought the weight down to 11.1 ounces, unloaded.

Now, the question is, "Will the Eagle Secret Service grips that I just ordered, reduce the weight even more?".

I realy don't like taking a Handgun into our office @ work, & if I do they don't know it..
I'd be interested in the results..

The gun weighs 13.4 ounces loaded with 5 rounds of 125gr ammo.

Recoil was not bad at all.
